explain tuning for diesels/ Why no stand alones like gasers

Im gona get back in the diesel market as soon as i sell my car and im gona bomb it out but not as extreme as my previous cars I have built but my only concern is whats available and how is it there is no standalone ECU's for diesels

Im used to tuner cars and strapping them on the dyno with a stand alone or a custome flash program and fine tuning fuel trims and spark to the tee but I cant find such a place or thing here in SOCAL or on this website.

I guess what I need to know is how is it I can put on a bigger turbo or injectors a box of my choice and the truck runs fine and makes power. If I did that on my current evo VIII I would blow the **** thing up on the first pull.

So why is it I can add more air and fuel to a diesel and make power with out having to fine tune the fuel trims to make power and be reliable for the most part granted I watch EGT's and so forth?

Please help out a gasser understand diesel tunning and performance

Thanks for any feedback

P.S Does anybody know any reputable diesel shops here in SOCAL area (dyno or installs etc)

Diesels aren't as sensitive as gassers. That's my guess. The Duramax has the EFI live so they can do that. Hopefully the Cummins boys will have their magic box soon too. Others can tell you in greater detail than I can.

I am relatively new to diesels but also work on gassers. The way I understand it is, because diesel fuel is injected directly into the cylinder and ignited by compressed air you can’t really run a diesel lean like you can a gas engine. Air fuel ratio is critical when tuning a turbo gas motor. With a diesel you can keep adding air until there is no more fuel to support the combustion of the oxygen. If you did that with a gas motor and ran lean you would melt it. If a diesel already has lots of air (bigger turbo, better intake/ exhaust) you can add fuel to burn the extra oxygen and gain more power. The combustion of the extra fuel does add heat so that is why with diesels EGTs are important to keep an Eye on.

Thanks Sinbadd that helps out alot. Man I can only imagine if u could fine tune the fuel being injected u would have less smoke and more power and lower EGT's and realy spank some *** with it. Now i just need to sell my 400 HP beast and get one of the last 5.9's on the lot and start a new prodject.

Keep the info coming guys it realy helps

Still looking for a SOCAL or some what near socal diesel shop

Just wanted to say welcome man.. I just converted from a heavily moddified WRX over to the diesel dark side last Friday, and I must say, it is freakin addicting! Can't offer much in the way of advice, other then that if you are questioning your decision to buy one of these trucks (as I did for months, it was really hard to let my subaru go), go test drive one. I was sold on them from the day I drove it, and the potential mods are just about endless.

Corona is the best I can do for you. Give Clyde a call. He is the man with diesel tuning up there (I'm down in San diego).

and Dodge has Diablo Sport, the have a new programmer coming out called the Trinity, it is a dash board monitor, a flash programmer and a diagnostics tool, also it has the capability to use multiple tunes thru a SD card or USB port. so i think we will have tuning software that will give us some more flexibility.

I don't think Diablo's Trinity is gonna be for the Cummins diesel. I hope I'm wrong. Van Aaken is coming out with a pretty powerful tuning setup very soon. Next few weeks supposedly. There's already so much out there it's getting crazy which is just fine by me. The more choices the better.
As far as tuning is concerned, as stated earlier, if you can fuel it and have the air to cool it, you can make insane power. I think we are just reaching the highest level a stock shortblock can handle. That seems to be 1200+hp at the rear wheels. Like I said, insane. If you've got the time, money and methods, 800rwhp is not uncommon. I'll be happy with 600rwhp... for now...

the Trinity is for the Cummins diesel, i sent Diablo Sport an email asking them if it was available for our truck because on RPM Outlet's website under the Dodge Turbo Diesel products it says it is for our trucks and on Diablo Sports website it says it is for GM and Ford, they emailed me back and said there website was incorrect, the did not relize that when they added the Trinity to there website that they left out the Dodge Diesel in there listing
