A stock 2.5 ton Rockwell axle assembly from a military application (the most common application) does not come equipped with pinion mounted disc brakes but rather hub mounted drums. The pinion mounted brakes work very well for trail use but are absolutely terrible for on road and/or high speed and heavily load use for two reasons.......the braking force is excellent (beacuase of the 6.72 multiplication factor) but fade and heat build up occurs VERY quickly at speed because the rotor rpm is far too high for the amount of brake surface area - there is only one rotor and caliper per axle.......and the pinion mounted brakes are very hard on pinion bearings - pinion bearing life is definitely cut way down as a result of this very high additional loading.

Pinion brakes are the way to go for a light trail rig but not when the Rockwell axle is used for it's intended application.

That said, some 5 ton axle applications appear to be OEM equipped with pinion brakes.

They are axle breaks also, they are used in conjustion with the front discs to help slow that beast!
