what if?
you would need some SERIOUS suspension upgrades...not to mention the engine bay (in stock form) wouldn't come close to fitting it...not so sure the frame could take that kinda beating either...not saying that it hasn't been done (banks has a diesel dakota) but I think it would be pretty spendy
Southern Truck parts had one back in 2001-2002 I think. It would get almost 30mpg and run 12s. Radiator and all but the CAC were moved to the bed to make room.
I think the Garmon boys (or maybe someone else in the GA connection) could tell you more about it. It was intense blue..

about the only way that a cummins in a stock frame dakota, would work is if you used the 3.9 4bt cummins. that should be a resonable swap, look for one in a junk Frito Lay truck.
I picked up a Issue of diesel world and it had a dakota with a 12 valve under the hood, the guy put leaf sprung 1 ton running gear under the frame.
was a nice looking truck, it was on 38's, had some engine mods and such done to it.

Diesel Power had a article a while back about a guy here in PA that did it, the truck had a mild lift but he made the 12v look stock under the hood of the Dakota. It is definitely a sleeper cause you would never know it had that much HP/TQ under the hood until it was pulling away from you..
There's a Dakota near me with a 12 valve in it. He lost the A/C, no room for the condenser with the intercooler and radiator up front. It uses an electric fan, and the fan pulley bolts have been replaced with countersunk flat head allen screws - that's how close the engine is to the radiator. It's a really sharp install, looks like it growed there.
get yourself one of these... a helpful tool for that install
Anything can be done. Time is simple, lots of hours in the shop the key factor is....how deep are your pockets. Mine ain't that deep, heck I put a quarter in my pocket and half of it is still stickin out!!!!
