What engine might this be?

I remember back in the late 70's early 80's seeing a late 70's ford 3/4 ton truck that a guy had put a diesel in. The engine was air cooled and fit in engine compartment very nicely. I could only tell you that the engine was probably pre-80's and air cooled with shields on it like a VW engine.

What could this have been?

Air cooled diesel? Hmm, not sure I've ever even seen such a thing.

Probably a deutz diesel (german company), Makes air, water and oil (I didn't about the oil cooled until recently) cooled engines.
We have a 3 cylinder on an air compressor at home. Good little engine.
There's others manufacturers out there, but deutz is pretty common.

Deutz is a common industrial air cooled engine, and there is another brand I can't remember that was used in boats.

I know, I can't think of it either, Agco used them in some tractors, friend of ours has a 5 cylinder one. Italian made engine, actually I think the whole tractor is.

The more I think about it. I think it had a flat opposed cylinder layout like a large corvair / VW engine. Can't remember how many cylinders though. And yes I do know that it was a diesel as I talked with the owner for a bit and complimented him on the installation.

Onan/ Cummins has air cooled diesel engines, I had a military genset with a 4 cylinder DJC engine in it.
Heavy and loud.
