What is the better year model
Personally, I'd put my lame VP44 against anyone else's 12V in the real world for a warmed over truck in the ~400hp range. Reasons?
1) Adjust power on fly if you want
2) For more driveable for a given HP level (less smoke, better mpg)
3) My 02 has rear disc brakes
4) My 02 lacks CAD for a 4x4
5) VP isn't nearly as unreliable as the haters say. I've lost one in 7 years, and I'm almost certain a bad ECM took it out (ECM talks to FPCM). Warranty covered it for $100.
6) Still running factory original lift pump after 7+ years. Still plenty of fuel pressure to support 150hp injectors (10psi).
7) No six-speeds in a 12V!
The *only* major repair expense I've had on my truck 7 years was an APPS for $330 or so.
I've lost an ECM (warranty covered) as well as a VP (warranty covered). Ironically, since I quit fiddling with my truck, things quit breaking
My truck spends almost all of its time running cold around town with tons of short trips-- very abusive cycle.
Given all that a later 01 or 02 24V can offer, I'd be hard pressed to go to a 12V.

I have no experience with a 12v just my 24v so I can't compare. I can just give my experience with my current truck.
I have over 440,000 kms or 275,000 miles and have not had to replace the vp44. I have the stock lift pump which has been replaced 3 times twice warrantied. I put on a Scotty big line kit when I put the third lp on in 2003 and have not had any trouble since.
I have used a fuel conditioner/lubricant since I purchased the truck in April 2001.
I hauled RV's in 2003 when I put on 125,000 miles. The truck idled nearly every night so there are a lot more hours on the Cummins then the miles would indicate.
I have had some other repairs to the truck but none that pertain to the fuel system.
This is the first time I have mentioned the mileage and durability of my truck.
I hope this does not jinks me!!!

You can also upgrade the front brakes to 3rd gen on 00-02 models.
