Mine too. I have done about 50 all tolled oil changes on my past rigs using nothing but Fleetgaurd. NOT ONE LEAK..

The denting of the can with a wrench is very important when installing as it can cause a failure. I have always done it by hand.

I would check the model of filter you are buying. Some of the older Fleetgaurd models for the first genners have a different seal and may not hold the higher oil pressure in the newer model trucks.

I thought you used the marks on the Mopar filter to determine the final tightening turn when putting them on....

I buy the Mopar filters by the case and the price comes down considerably...as much as 30-40%.

cheers f

Mopar=fleetguard for ALL CTD applications.

My experience is similar. Never any leaks. Always hand tighten only. Always Fleetguard (although Purolator is an "approved" filter that I would trust).

While we're on the subject of oil. I wanna go through a complete inspection of all seels for oil leaks in my truck. I already had the front cover seel behind the radiator done.

How many other areas are there that I need to look for? The rear seel is the one thats a pain to get to right? Then you have the oil pan seel, right?

I apply oil to the filter gasket & mating surface when installing a filter. I can easily make 3/4 or more turn after the gasket seats. No need to use a wrench in that case.

My recent problem was with a Fram PH3976A that split open 1/2 inch on the side of the filter. It didn't leak until after 2500 miles and then it lost 2 gallons of oil in just a few minutes. Fram people saild it was my fault! Needless to say, I will go back to Mopar.

I have heard enough Fram stories like that to scare me and anyone who will lend me an ear away for good.

The engine appears unharmed. Oil pressure normal & no noise. It all happened in my driveway (gravel). "Check gauge" light came on and I promptly shut it off. Besides, DC is giving me a new truck due to ocean salt water exposure during the shipping process. So, I'll get a late 2004.5 with no mileage and a 600 engine. Never any problem with the one I have tho. How about that for customer service? Apparently other vehicles in the shipment have had lots of problems with wiring & computers.

I'll add my oil filter story. I recently bought this 2003 which had 7k miles on the odometer. By the dealer window sticker, it was due for an oil change.

It took me a few days to locate a filter here in town and in the mean time, I found a small fluid puddle on my driveway. A quick look under the truck showed fluid all over the steering linkage, stabalizer and the engine/frame crossmember.

That weekend I performed the needed oil change, but laid under the truck for a while to try to source the fluid leak. The only place on the engine with any sign of fluid was on the bottom of the filter. I then reached up and put my hand around the filter. To my surprise, the filter easily spinned loose with almost no grip on the filter body...it was THAT loose. Somehow the engine maintained oil pressure and upon completing the oil change and dumping the oil back into the 1 gallon containers, I discovers the engine oil level only low by 1/2 court...very lucky indeed.

10sec, I'd bet that your truck already had its first oil change by then. It usually takes an olympic gorilla to get the first one off. I've never heard of an original oil filter loosening itself off the engine.

Glad you found it in time.

I tighten mine by hand then snug it just a bit - I had an oil filter loosen itself on me once. If it ain't tight, it ain't right.
