Volvo 770 w/Detroit Diesel
My neighbor restores classic cars/trucks. Most of these cars are delivered via Exotic Car Transport.
The latest was delivered by a Volvo 770 with a Detroit Diesel and a 10 speed auto trans.
The driver was pretty cool and had the time to show me the setup.
After a quick ride around, I was impressed by the brute torque and yet smoothness of both the engine and the shifting.
The trailer housed a vintage Porsche, a 55 Vette, and a brand new Jag, making it about half full.
Standing beside the tractor, it was quieter than my pickup outside and the inside was very nice, quite and comfortable.
However, at 5.7 mpg, Im glad I dont have to buy the fuel!

The 60 Series is a good engine. It pretty much saved Detroit. Heck for the last 12 years its been the leading engine in sales for OTR trucks. However, after driving a Cummins or a CAT and jumping into the 60, you can tell very quickly that it just doesnt have the lugging power or low end like an N14, ISX, or a C15. For a fleet engine, you cant beat them, good fuel economy, and good power at cruising speed. Get one off the road and into construction use and you'll be wishing you would have gone with the Cummins or kitty cat.
5.7mpg seems real low to me for the 60. Most will see around 6.5 to 7.

Not necessarily. It could be due to the driver's inexperience. I didn't fare much better with a 13 speed until I got the routine down pat. Today I prefer the Eaton auto-shift.

I’m an old truck driver. When I was driving they did not put an auto in a road truck. So I just thought that it would be about like the difference in most other things 1-1.5 mpg.
But then again when I was driving truckers were respected, and in return were respectful of the other drivers, not like today. Present company is exempt from the above.
Hey, I just had a thought maybe we should start putting standard shift back in the big trucks , maybe then these some of the yoyos that are driving today would not be able to. Just my .02, not intended to start a flame war.

Ive worked on/restored, or helped restore a couple old trucks.
One Mack and one Pete.
The Mack was a 47 and the Pete was a 55.
We restored both of them back to original condition.
Thats the only experience I have with OTR trucks. Neither of those came close to the kind of torque I felt with that 60. I was impressed.
Then again, neither of the trucks I restored were driven enough to really tell. (I dont have the correct license ).
Id love the chance to do a full custom Pete with an ISX! I could have a lot of fun with a project like that.
