770 or 116FXP3?
Looking at .300 for hunting this October in CO. I've found what I think is a good deal and want your opinions.
Option 1: $490.00
Remington Model 770 with 3-9x40mm scope in RealtreeAP camo.
24" barrel 8.50 lbs. With Magazine
Link: http://www.remington.com/products/fi.../model_770.asp
Option 2: $663.00
Savage Arms 116FXP3 with 3-9x40mm scope
24" barrel 6.75 lbs. No Magazine
Link: http://www.savagearms.com/116fxp3.htm
Both are new.
Experiences, thoughts, opinions or other suggestions (within this price range)?

I am leaning toward the Remington simply because of the price. I was borrowing my brother's Savage 30-06 and I liked them, but I just don't see much of a difference for almost $200.
Look around and find a Rem Model 700 SPS. Can be had for prices you mention.
Just friendly advice from a guy who knows a bit about guns, but you will not want either scope that those guns come with. .300's can be hard on scopes, ESPECIALLY cheap ones, and no offense but the scopes those guns come with are el cheapo's. The good news is decent scopes do not have to cost $500.
Look around, find you a Model 700, Ruger 77 or even a Savage you mentioned without a scope, then buy a Weaver Fixed 6 power or Burris Fullfield II 3x9 scope for under $200.
The whole set-up may cost around $650-$750 but it WILL save you money in the long run and you'll have a better rig. You'll be glad you spent the little extra, I guarantee it.
Also if you have never fired a .300 before I suggest you do so before spending the $$ on one. Folks not familiar with larger calibers often find they have a heckuva time shooting them worth a darn because of recoil. Doesn't mean your not manly if the recoil bothers you, recoil effects everyone big, small, and in-between.
And a .300 IS NOT needed for CO, a 30/06 will do just fine with less recoil, cheaper ammo, and less noise and it shoots plenty flat. The same can be said for a 270, 280 and a host of other calibers. 99% of elk and deer are taken under 300 yds even in the wide open west.
Hope this helps,
Bill

I honestly do not like the 770... a 700 yes, but that 770 just doesn't do anything for me.
I have a Savage 110 pre accutrigger, pre accustock. the scope "may" get you thru your hunt, but the simmons 8 point that savage uses really is a low end scope that is just on there for the "hey, you get a free scope with it" people.
I dont know if its being offered on the long action yet, but Savage is now offering a blocked and bedded short action under the "accustock" tag. Supposed to really help the legendary out of the box accuracy of Savage.

or google the accustock for other articles.

The Savage will most likely be more accurate than the Remington, and the Savage Accu-Trigger is about the best stock trigger in the industry. The Remington 770/710 was designed to create a usable rifle at the lowest price possible. The old adage that "you get what you pay for" certainly applies here. That said, the Remington will probably do most of what you need it to do, just not as well as the Savage. The included scopes will probably also work OK, but remember the adage quoted earlier. The advice by tx270 above is also good. It is much more important where you hit a game animal then what you hit it with. Get a rifle that is comfortable to shoot and then practice with it until you can really hit where you aim.
