General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

University of Hawaii College Senior

Hi Everyone,

I am a senior at the University of Hawaii West Oahu working on a project about the Dodge 2007 Cummins 6.7 liter diesel engine. I was wondering if there has been a noticeable change in performance with some of these older model diesel engines with the ULSD fuel? Does anyone have any feedback for me?

Thanks

I have no change what so ever. Here at work we have a couple of 24 valve and 12 valve motors also with no change. We also have a fleet of Freightliner FLD-120's and Century Class C-112's and C-120's with various Cummins, Cats and now Mercedes. There has been no noticable change in anything at all.

Many people around here have been claiming 1-2mpg less since the arrival of the new ULSD, myself included. But, the change to ULSD in most areas came in the fall, at the same time some of these areas are beginning to winterize their fuel...There is a lot of speculation about engine life being effected by ULSD but only time will tell with that. There is a thread about fuel consumption of the 6.7 posted in the 2007 section, but these trucks are still pretty new with low miles so not many of these motors have been "broken in".

What do you mean no change between the 12 and 24?

No change of performance between the LSD and ULSD. Now these trucks are used as services trucks and parts getters, so there are no perf mods to them at all. So no problems with the ULSD. The way I read her post is that she is looking for performance differances using the ULSD in the OLDER motors, not the 6.7............

BornGirl,

There is significant anecdotal evidence which suggests the recent advent of ULSD is responsible for a marked increase in the number of injection pump failures in the older trucks due to their soft parts' deterioration resulting from the lower aromatic makeup and concomitant lower lubricity of the new #2.

Besides searching the threads, posting a few appropriately designed polls will gather a great deal of useful data for your research.

Does the ULSD have the same PPM requirements for #1 & #2? I would assume so, just checking.
