Two questions (Please help if you can)

one: Did Chevy quit making the 4 wheel steer and why did they if they did?

Two: For everybody that has a 2007 and newer. Are the transmission's week on the automatic like they were on the 2nd Gen. and what has been the most common major problem on the newer trucks?

Ok ok I know that's more then two questions but I would love yall's help. I am trying to convince my dad that he needs to buy a new dodge and get rid of his 97 ford. For a while there I had him convince but then somebody where works with told him that Chevy is better and that they have the Alison transmission and that dodge start's to have the dashboard problems and some other stuff. I told him look dodge is still better that no matter if a dash board start's messing up. So if you know of problems with the new Chevy's spill them. I guess if you know major problems with the new dodge I should say keep them to yourselves but I need to know those also.

4 wheel steering on trucks and suvs was canceled because of lack of interest/sales.

My dad has an 08 2500hd 4wd with the 6sp auto. 6th gear is useless. He runs it in Manual 5 all the time otherwise it constantly annoyingly shifts between gears, even in 5th it shifts to 4th with the slightest hill, bump the throttle and it launches into 3rd. Not to mention its the doggiest truck weve ever had. Its been in and out of the shop constantly. Dont get me wrong, were Chevy guys on the ranch and never have issues, other than this truck. We had a 98 work truck that was a champ, replaced it with a 06 2500hd 6.0 auto 4wd and its a terrific truck, especially with a superchips. Maybe Chevy will get the right flash and have good luck with this new tranny before long.

The Allison Trans, IMOP is the week point of Chevy. I have first hand experience with the Allison line of transmissions and can tell you there are better transmissions produced in the world.

I have to disagree with rbrettctd 100%. This truck is the best running, best shifting CTD I have ever had. The truck makes plenty of power even stock and the trans shifts at just the right speeds for me. Every other CTD/auto truck I have had either shifted way too fast or waited way too long to shift.

The only issue I see with the new trucks is that the emissions junk gets dirty and clogged up and causes CELs. I have been able to make all my CELs go away by just driving the truck harder. I drive around in town in manual 5th just to help keep the DPF cleaned. I guess that since I do that, I don't totally disagree with him on that count...

I thought rbrettctd was talking about an 08 Chevy 2500.

Maybe he'll jump in and clarify.

Correct. I thought that was understood since the subject was on Chevrolet, but for the record, my dads is a 2008 CHEVROLET 2500HD with a 6.0l GAS engine and Chevrolets 6speed non Allison automatice transmission.

Cost and extra width killed the 4WS. Pickuptrucks.com just did a great write-up on their demise:

I'm sure it'll be back someday. Innovations like that take awhile to catch on.

Sorry. I misinterpreted what was written. I can't comment on the Chevy but I'll take rbrettctd's word on that one. I will stick by my praise of the new Dodge with the 68re trans. It's sweet!!!

well i had a 2002 chevy with the dmax and allison combo and loved the truck until the injectors went south not a bit of problem with the allison traded the truck for an 08 dodge 3500 ctd the dodge does seem to have more power i have heard that the new dmax engines are having some problems with the injectors failing and a few are overheating when towing but i guess all brands for truck have some problems

the first gen injectors 2001-2004 are complete junk, they eat them right and left. 2004.5 and newer have no problems with the injectors. The 2004.5-2005 trucks have overheating problems. The 2006+ trucks are more or less problem free and the one to get (of the dmax world) IMO.

NSBU problems and converter drainback are common problems with the earlier ones. The 2006+ ones have some problems with cooler lines leaking, thats GM's problem though, they were stupid and cut corners when they designed it. I know everyones uncles brothers mailman whos a service writer/tech at the local GM dealer has heard stories of thousands of allisons blowing up every week though.

I disagree about the weak point on the chevy, if you leave the truck stock and do long haul towing with it, I think the engine will give out way before the trans does, provided you take care of it. The [dmax] engine is a "light heavy duty" design and nothing more, whereas the trans is a true medium duty design trans, like the cummins is a true medium duty design engine.

I havent had any problems with mine though, its held 600hp towing and probably 100 1/4 mile passes for 74,000 miles with billet nothing inside it, just alto clutches and a triple disc converter.
