So what does a 24 foot enclosed race trailer weigh fully loaded? Or even a 16 foot for that matter? Plus cargo in the truck...

I'd get the dual rear wheel 3500 especially if you're not daily driving it. The only thing I'd be looking at is drw if it was a truck I'd use primarily for pulling.

Unless you run across a super deal on a 2500. The only differences between the trucks will be the rear springs and dual rear wheels. They'll both pull.
Gotta pay attention to the stability and pin weight of the trailer though.

Not sure of a 24' but my 16' went over the scales at about 2200lb empty. We run gokarts right now, 2 in the trailer at 240 each would be 2680 so would safely say loaded the trailer would weight between 3000-3500.

That'll get the best fuel mileage out of three (provided it has the 3.73 rear end). Seems to be an important consideration these days....

Oh heck then, I didn't realize that. I thought you were pulling race cars around the country.

My 2500 has no problem pulling 10K off the drop hitch (never pulled more). I use a Putnam XDR hitch mainly incase of heavy tounge weight sometimes I've experienced, it's good to 15,000lbs and 1,500 tounge... It's also cheap and looks factory.

Get whatever you can get a good deal on. The DRW will be much more stable though if you're getting up near that 10,000lbs mark. With an enclosed trailer the wind might get to it... You can also add sway control.

An auto with 3.73 gears is gonna get the best mpg and the 6 speed with 4.10 will get the worst. I'd personally avoid the 6 speed they don't do as well with fuel consumption, they are geared low.

I own both a DMax and a CUmmins and they both have their merits. If you're really worried about back seat space, look at a DMax too. Either way, stay away from a 6.0. You'll likely get a better deal on a Qcab Dodge over a Crew Cab GM if you can sacrifice the backseat room a little.
Dodge will be pretty much bullet proof, except it seems front end parts wear more quickly (ball joints, track bar, wheel bearings). GM, just as bulletproof, IMO, and will pull what you're pulling with ease.
There's good deals to be had on both right now. I'm trying to get $20k for my immaculate CC DMax with no luck (and I'm in the Colorado gas patch where the economy is still strong and everyone drives a diesel!)
I bought the Mega in my sig with 10k miles on it and about $5k in extras, basically a new truck, for $30k. Deals abound right now. You could probably get into a Mega with 60k-70k miles for low/mid $20k's if you had to have the DOdge and a HUGE back seat.

Well went back today and the 04 was gone and the chevy I was suppose to look at sold so I didn't get to look at it either. From what I have read I ruled out the ford. Drove the 03 and was happy with it, minus rear leg room LOL, but found that the pass side AC didn't blow as cold as the driver side, not dual control, the dash had a crack in it, which the salesman replied "it's not a $30K truck", there was slight stain on the roof, and the pass rear wheel fender didn't have the gloss the rest of the truck did like it had been repainted. He went through the normal selling tech. and final came back with 16,900 out the door. He tried to slip my trade in there with it. I told him to take the trade out of the equation and I would pay him 15,000 out the door. Said there was noway he could do that and I told him Thank you and you have my number. Even spending that 30 mins in there made me uncomfortable, I HATE DEALERSHIPS.

I think you are rolling the dice with any 6.0 NO. The 03 and 04 were the worse. My brother-in-law has an 05 and he hasn't had any engine problems so far (fortunately) but his reverse gear did go out on the transmission. Nice truck overall, but even he will admit my Cummins will outpull his...even stock to stock.

We are definately all biased here. We like the Dodge Cummins or we wouldn't own them and frequent this website. Some people think that the ideal truck would be a Ford Truck body with a Cummins Engine and Allison Transmission. But I would rather have the BEST engine (Cummins) and work around the rest of it. Our trucks are not perfect, but you just don't have to worry about the Cummins. They are solid. Buy any of them with confidence. You cannot buy a 6.0 Powerjoke with confidence, imo.

Good luck with your decision.

Billy -

You don't list your location. There are many, many of these truck avaliable out there. I woud strongly suggest looking on autotrader.com or a similar site and do a notionwide search for excatly what you are looking for. Truth is, I have found it's far better to travel to the truck you really want to buy (for the right price too) than to put up with what a local dealer has on his lot. Sometimes you find a windfall locally - more often these days, you're better off to do a thorough seach and find just that right one. Use the Carfax accounts (as a guide) and watch for scams, but most of us on here would agree with the philiosphy. It's a lot of money you're talking about, wouldn't you really rather have the truck you want?

Good luck...

Don't take a chance with a Ford, keep looking for a Dodge. I bought my 03 3500 4x4 with 110,000 miles for $ 15,500 6 months ago, and it's in much better shape than the one you mentioned.
Keep looking, and don't be afraid of going far away to find a deal.

I've been told by someone that actually did it (a ford fanatic) that you can get an additional 100K of warranty on the 6.0 as long as it has under 100K on it to begin with. Something worth checking into if you plan to leave it stock and keep maint records.

I think you need to clean the EGR on them often or just block it off??? They caused problems...

The 06/07 was the better years.

There is also a classified section up top here too worth looking into... Very top of the screen kinda hidden.

If you really need rear seat room go for an 06 Mega Cab or Ford/Chevy CC. I can get a couple 6' adults into mine but they aren't as comfy as in a real CC like the Ford.

Seems like the Cummins by far everyone can agree does better MPG though.

I would check out Autotrader, like 200 mikes of Denver or Dallas. More choices thhan you can imagine. If you tow, get the dually. Get the Max cab, if you need the space. You have 1 life, have it your way!
The Cummins is the best motor, end of story. It also gets the best mileage. It also seems like you always get more with a Dodge.

That truck has the new fandangeld 6.7L emissions engine so for a first timer I would stick to the simplicity of the 5.9L. Also, with the truck being at a honda dealer they probably bought it at an car auction.
