Toyota Announces Diesel for Tundra
Katsuaki Watanabe, Toyota Motor Corporation President, announced Sunday night that the Tundra will receive a clean diesel engine in the next few years. We're placing bets on the 4.5-liter D-4D V8 turbodiesel used in the Australian Land Cruiser.

Yeh I went to have a looksee at the Tundra. So far it only comes in a half ton so if they add a diesel to it, it's not much use for towing much of anything 5ver or goose wise. Hitch wise it was 10400 or 10800 I don't remember. They did say there are plans for the diesel and "possibly" a heavier truck.
Some of their new ads are amusing. I am sure you have seen the big hay bail trailer. It seemed that the bales equaled the tow load limit, without the trailer.Almost like they want you to believe it is more than what they say.
Tundra has failed to meet new Sales expectations and quality is a growing concern. I think even Consumer REport is not overly thrilled with them.
Seems like the new Chevy Gaser has gotten much better reviews.

Toyota is riding on their quality coat tails from the 80s and 90s. I am a long time toyota owner, and still am, but I see them going downhill... not that they make a bad truck, just not as rugged as their older counterparts...
I would really like to see a diesel sequoia or 4runner in a few years. My wife drives a 4runner now and will be due for a new rig in 3-4years.

My impressions of the Tundra, which do not include a test drive, indicate a farily cheap build level, highly un-focused style and design elements (inside in particular) and material quality that seems subpar, especially when compared to the new Chevrolet models. My father has owned a 1990 4-cylinder Truck since new, and it seemse much better built overall.
I do hope these two diesel offering get to the US. However I hope in their quest to be the biggest in the world, that a company with a reputation like Toyota dosen't mess itself up in the process.
I've owned a few Mitsu's and can honestly say just the opposite...every imported car from them was a pile of crap, while the ones made here stateside were some of the most flawless pieces of machinery I have ever owned.

Mitsubishi has struggled with quality for many years, and are not considered a "top tier" japanese brand.
This is just my observation, but perhaps their quality is suffering due to thier seeming endless prusuit of getting BIGGER. In addition, thier quality continues to decline due to an alarming lack of focus with thier products. This is even reflected in thier car & truck's styling - do you see any type of focus to that in thier recent models?

Here is a monster Tundra diesel dually I saw at the National Western Stock Show in Denver last night. It had an 8.something liter diesel but the specs were still only like 300hp and 600ft/lbs. It also said it was expected to tow 24,000 lbs. I wish I would have got a picture of the tire size, these things weren't your standard pickup tire.
My father recently bought an '07 tundra with the 5.7. I've had a chance to put some towing miles on it since my truck is down with a bad head. It's rated for 10,200 and I've had jsut about that on it--my bumper pull trailer with my truck on it. It advertises 381hp and I believe it has every pony they claim. It got the load up to speed quite smartly with about 1/2 throttle. In tow/haul mode, it lets the engine wind up even with light throttle application, and it will downshift/hold a gear coming down hill. The 6 speed auto is very slick and the slapstick function is fun and actually works quite well for towing once I got used to it. The interior layout is a little lackluster. Creature comforts are geared more toward the passenger than the driver. I should not have to reach over the shifter to get my coffee!! Overall, the ride is firm (he's got the 'sport' package w/Bilstein shocks, etc) but reassuring. Handles solidly. Huge brakes and 18'' alloys. Turn off the traction control and watch the tires vaporize without powerbraking--just mash the skinny pedal and listen to that sweet V8 run up to 7 grand
I think it's a great truck. He paid 27 for it, I think. It doesn't feel like an overgrown grocery getter like other new 1/2 tons I've driven, but it's still not an HD work truck by any means. More of a 4x4 hotrod. I pulled 5500lbs from Buffalo to Binghamton with no issues, just a lot of shifting. Passed everything but a gas station. 12.6MPG (hand calc) running 70. I know for fact my truck pulled down 18mpg pulling the same load, 'course the ride wasn't as nice

Several years ago I was forwarded a funny TV ad from Australia that was for their diesel Nissan pickup. I understand that they have had the Toyota diesel pickups for years as well...(sigh)...the rest of the planet runs on diesel, and we're stuck with pretty much only 2 choices: Cummins Rams, and VW's. (no, Brand F and Brand G don't count as 'real' diesels because they're V8s!)
I do know that Toyota and Nissan are both rediculously priced as it is...and get get as-bad mileage as a Hemi...am told by many that they best they can do on the highway is 12-13mpg empty @ 70mph. This is for both Toy and Nis.
I wish them luck...competition is good! It keeps everyone on their toes to bring us better and better products, right?!
