Talk to a Dmax owner at the pumps today.
duramax vs. cummins...i own both.
this is what I know....
I have both an 03 duramax, and an 03 SO cummins. I have a Van AAken 115 for the GMC and a quad race box for my cummins.
stock - there is no comparison.. the duramax is way faster.
chiped - there is still no comparison the duramax is still faster (even at 140.. hands down).
The dodge is fast enough for me and I like the truck better, although it is a rush driving that V8. Hopfully my GM is sold tomorrow then I can spend some doh on my cummiins.
Anyone who can beat a modded duramax has one fast Cummins... good on ya.

A few points.. The DM is not EGT restricted as far as I can surmise. Most guys add fuel boxes and don't need to add turbo as its oversized to begin with and 2000°F EGT's seem standard.
With that the CTD is not designed for those temps, so initially you need to upgrade the turbo. Sad fact but its a requirement to keep the engine alive.
With those points in hand, with a box only, the DM will benifit more. Getting the I-6 to spin up the same as a V-8 is not as easy, hense the drag racing community using V-8 exclusively. However, torque is neat comparison, not the be-all end-all, but a nice comparison. To have a 6 cylinder engine pump out near 900Ft-lbs with a similar upgrade to the v-8 for just around 750 mark, just exemplifies the geometry advantage of an inline engine.
More hearsay... Well I know a group of mechanic guys that with the prevous employer had V-8 diesels for their 15,000lb trucks. Now they have branched off on their own and all have 3500 CTD autos. All of them have been surprised with the amount of pull down under 1800 Rpm where the would have to pull gears in the old trucks to maintain or gain speed.
I still can't believe how the DM doesn't just melt down with the stock EGT's never mind the modded ones. And high EGT usually causes high NOx, so I really don't get the design philosophy.

I don't know of any modded Duramaxs and would like to find one. I would be stunned if a Duramax beat my 01 Ram from a 40mph rolling start. I know I would have no chance from a standing start with my 6 spd., even against a stock one, but once my truck is in 4th gear, it is like a rocket, 1st to 3rd sucks.
if you were not so dam far away, i would like a chance at you

I don't doubt that there are many heavily modded DMs and PSDs that would blow my slightly modded CTD out of the water. I am mainly refering to guys around here who take a few minutes to put in a chip or box and think they got the fastest diesel around. I've beaten a couple of PSDs and DMs, it has always been going up a hill and I think they were stock or close to it as I did not see much smoke. I do not race going downhills and on flats where it is safe to travel at high speeds, I back off at around 80 mph. You get jail time here if you cause an accident while racing.

Do we hear 32mpg in the ocean, or 33 going up the side of a mountian?
Although I thought it was going to be more like a Fight Club mission than a story. You know..."Your mission...is to talk to a Duramax owner at the pump today..."
