GEEEEEZE
Note to self:
Stay the He** outta Southern Virginia unless driving a bone stock Schwinn bicycle. :
Dang!!!!, you guys got it rough.
Maybe they're trying to hurry and make up that ticket quota (that we ALL know doesn't really exist :) that they missed out on while pullin' security details after 9-11.

i straight-piped my truck (again) with the flow-through muffler still on, but i usually get nervous in my home town as they crack down on certain people with exhaust systems (though they like me, now it's too loud). i know numerous people who've gotten away with being straight piped. it's usually one officer that doesn't like you it seems.<br><br>i was pulled over once for have a true straight pipe. the officer was very unhappy with me, but let me go. however...i was NOT to go back there without a muffler again or there'd be problems. he didn't want me in the area in which i can understand to a point. i haven't been back since with my truck. <br><br>to me, it seems that the state troopers generally don't care as much as the local police officers do. i've had a loud exhaust (even straight piped) to where the officers could hear it very well and never seemed to blink an eye at me.<br><br>It's weird how some officers are furious at you for your straight pipe and how others think it's the coolest thing in the world.<br><br>Tom

Hope this helps......<br><br>46.2-1047 Code of Virginia, states, "It shall be unlawful for any person to operate on the highways in the Commonweath a motor vehicle equipped with a gutted muffler, muffler cutout or straight exhaust". <br> <br>And 46.2-1048........<br>" It shall be unlawful to operate a motor vehicle equipped with a with any emmission control system (exhaust system) or device unless it is of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use upon the vehicle as standard factory equipment".<br><br> Also 46.2-1049........<br>"It is unlawful to operate a M/V unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment or comparable to that design in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive noise. <br><br><br>I think most of us around here are in violation ;D<br><br><br><br>

The key concept is the word "comparable" in 1048 and 1049. It doesn't say "identical." It says "comparable." If you lose or gut the muffler, you're toast. If you install a 4 inch system with an aftermarket straight-thru muffler designed and sold for the vehicle, you have an argument.

Straight pipe and dumped. Been pulled over for spinning my tires so I know he heard it. It was a bike cop to. Never said a word about it. A lot of diesels are straight piped and none of them care.

And do they hassle the Harley riders too?
[/quote]
Yes.
Again it depends on the location, and your attitude.
In "Old Town" Alexandria, they'll cite you the first time (if you 're not being an a**), and will impound your scoot if they catch you a second time. (Upper-Crustys in $750,000 townhouses don't like noise.)
Falls Church Va, enforces only if you're doing something that catches their attention.
I'm still waiting for them to turn their attention to the "Thumper-Skates" (Ricers with bazillion watt stereos)

Neighbors across the road have a couple beaters with no exhaust. Nothing more irritating than a loud 4 cyl gasser. Loud dogs that chase vehicle too (wrong side of the truck for smoke). They either work late or run drugs all night, but I pay them back some mornings. 71 cc chainsaw W.O.T from 7a-7p. 8)

Man glad I don't live there.... Around here they don't even look at you. Almost every Dodge and most of the Fords are straight pipe. Just about all the dumptrucks and rigs are too. But if you speed or are overloaded they are real quick to get you. From what I saw in the dodge book it only is against a federal law on 10,000 up gvwr trucks. Look in the book. <br>Chase
