In my state there are 3 basic exhaust laws, 1 of which is new and hardly anyone knows about it yet: -There is a sound level law, and a muffler requirement. -There is the federal law (about no modifications, etc.). Then there is an emissions law for '97+ vehicles that requires that the be plugged into a diagnostic computer to check for codes, which is connected to the state. But the cool part is that if the vehicle passes this check, it is exampt from a visual check of the emissions system or the exhaust.

With my 3" straight pipe, my truck is somewhat loud when I'm on the throttle under a load, but during normal cruising at partial throttle its pretty quiet. When I say "somewhat loud", its really not that bad...it just sounds like all the log trucks going by our road. My exhaust is just the downpipe and a 36" straight piece behind it.

Rarely enforced though, but if someone complains you will likely get a fix it ticket.
I'd like to see the chapter and verse on that. If this were true, the only place you could get your exhaust worked on would be the dealership.

TomW...some states are that way right now !!!

And what's this about VA ?

I've had my 79 (which is an emissions truck) straight dual piped with no furry things for over 14 yrs, and it has been insopected numerous times at different places.

It failed 1 time...the guy commented on how nice it sounded, and after crawling under the truck, he commented on how nice the exhaust system was. Then he popped the hood and hit me for no egr valve. Said nothing about the dual pipes and no kitty, just the egr valve.

My 04.5 is straight piped, and its not that loud to me... Gets a bit loud in tunnels with the windows down, I can really hear it, but normal driving, its not loud enough, but I still have my Catylitic converter, mind you.
