IMHO, if your truck didn't have a catalytic converter stock, then as long as nobody complains about the noise you should be OK. But cops might do an add-on if you give them grief during a trafic stop.

My truck has a straight pipe and isn't that loud during normal driving. It isn't even that loud when I get on it. I think the turbo quiets it down a bunch.

OTOH, I don't have that much experience with CTD's so others should chime in.

In Virginia, it's anything altered from the factory. Been there, went through that.

i have found that a good rule of thumb to go by is a state's gun laws. If they have very tight restrictive gun laws then there vehicle laws most likely will be also. Take california for instance, and MA.

There is a guy in our town that straight piped his. He drives all over the state and he say's he's never had any trouble anywhere. IMHO his 2004.5 is not as loud as a pre 2004 cummins.

Actually it's a federal law that you can't alter the factory exhaust system
Rarely enforced though, but if someone complains you will likely get a fix it ticket.

My truck has 3" straight pipe just past the back of the cab and then 5" straight pipe back to the front of the rear axle with a turndown and I haven't had any trouble but then again I spend most of my time in rural areas or on the highways. Even when I have been in metro areas (Tulsa or OKC), no one has said anything about it.

Mine is pretty stinkin loud. Gets me lots of comments, compliments, and complaints... None from the police tho.

By the letter of the law I am not legal... I am for emissions, but not noise control...

In OK they cannot pull you over for illegal exhaust, because they cannot tell for certian that it is without inspecting. But you can be cited for it.

There was a stink around here a little bit back because of the bikers in a certian bar...

I wonder if straight piping an '03 exhaust could free up almost as much flow as going to a 4" from the turbo back. Just thininking out loud mind you.

OT - Keep me posted. I've thought of that a few times but never done anything about it. I'm just an hour from you and Monty (1st gen moderator) is just a bit further away.

Back on topic.
