Straight pipe in Texas
Anyone know the law about them? Went to get inspected, guy looks under it, says as of Jan 1 07, all trucks, gas or diesel must have muffler. $800 fine. I thought this was just on 07 and up trucks. I ended up going down the road and getting it done okay. Anyone know what the deal with this is?
Just moved up from Texas last year. . .my last dodge was sold with out a kitty but I also did remove the muffler and install a test pipe my last year in town. . . .never had any problems with it. . .I did watch my foot though around the law.
When a Texas truck is inspected they look at VERY little. . does it have a motor and tires?

it's nothing new... every vehicle is required to have a muffler. BUT, in TX a turbocharger is considered a muffler on a diesel.

20.15 Exhaust System. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with muffler in good working order and in constant operation.
Muffler defined: Muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle plates or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and/or turbine wheels for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from a diesel engine, both of which are effective in reducing noise.

Well I have, not being 'proud', probably the loudest truck in town. Ive been told this many times. And i have been pulled over twice here for exhibition of accel., probably because when I pull of the line at 1500rpms, it sounds like a drag launch.

But if every body trys to be as loud and smoke as much as possible that will all change soon. Not saying that my truck is quiet or dose not smoke if I get on it but the tree hugers will get the law changed if we are not carefull in towns and so on. rbrettctd you know what town I an talking about don't you? I bet its the same one you got pulled over in. I like to smoke out the ricers and so on but we have to be carefull. Ya'll have fun. DTW rbrettctd are you still going to pull at DeLion.

I understand exactly what youre saying. Problem is, I really dont romp on it much in town. I go through some country intersections between school and work, and save the fun for those, where no one is around. Around town, I take it easy now-those 2 warnings were within 2 months of being down here, and Ive learned to respect the law and those tree huggers, especially since I like my 12.50 inspection. 1stgen545-I will be there-when is that one again? You gonna be at the Stephenville pull in a couple weeks?
August 10-11. I wont make it to Stephenvill I need to fix my injection pump seal and get the 3200 spring kit in it. I wasn't saying that you were doing any thing wrong I just ment people over all, even ME. I have to try not to react when the little G-vill kids try to get me to race or something becous they see my gauges and hear my 5" exhaust and thay want to see what it will do. But some times I can't help it and have to blow there doors off. Most off them think that a ton of smoke means that it must be making like 800HP right? I think most of there trucks are slower than stock from extreme over fueling. There are a few G-vill trucks that run a lot better than mine but they don't feal like they have to prove it. What else do you need to get the HX 35 on your truck?

I know what you mean about peoples theory on smoke-I raced an 05 Dodge last year. We stopped to talk after we each won a go. One of the guys with him thought he'd win, because his truck blew more smoke. I think I have everything to install my turbo on the way. I ordered the intake horn I needed from a guy on here, and some silicon couplers, so that I can get the turbo on soon. If I get the stuff this week, hopefully Ill get it on this weekend. If not, itll have to be done beginning of summer, and Ill go ahead and do the intercooler then. Theres a dirtymax in town that wants to race, so I want to get the turbo on before then, and go out to our strip and smoke him.
I dont know the exact muffler, cat requirements but i do know that you truck can not be louder than 85 decibles, and yes the DPS have decible meters, so be careful, and even though the turbo qualifies as a muffler it dont work i still got a ticket and still get pulled over.
Actually, according to the wording, the muffler goes AFTER the turbo. Notice what it says: "for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and/or turbine wheels for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from a diesel engine, both of which are effective in reducing noise." So, if they want to read it very carefully, they've got you. My truck had a big 5" straight pipe when I got it in December. It was fun making lots of noise with it. But I got tired of the drone on the freeway, so last week I installed a new 4" MBRP turbo-back system with straight-through muffler. Sounds much quieter, although it does have a nice rumble. And no change in performance that I can detect.
Muffler or no, one can always be cited for excessive noise:
