starting an older diesel

My brother's 96 won't start unless you give it a bit of throttle. A friend of mine has a 95 that kicks right off without giving it any throttle. Seems to be how the pump is setup and where the idle speed is at.

I think if your idle speed is just a little too low it won't get enough fuel to get the fire going.

Now if you take an A or P pump that's on a John Deere engine its racked open when they are off and push alot of fuel when starting. I have to pull the shut off out a little bit when starting.

Is that what pullers are refering to when they mention the 'ag governor'?

Yes, its one of them, they are variable speed governors, there's a couple of different ones, not all of them do that. Case tractors don't start like that.
