It is hard to see under the covers but it looks sad. Totally along the latest lines and trends, HUGE cab and a little bitty bed, like those Explorer based SUV-trucks (I guess, you could call them SU-cks?).
They do have their place - in spiffy driveways of million dollar homes. Call me conservative but I don;t picture one of these in an oil patch. Well, maybe like these Tundra commercials: "Toyota?.." - "Get in". Very cute.

I think the mega cab was a stupid idea anyway. Any cab configuration that limits the bed length is a bad idea. People should be able to buy a real bed with any cab. Dodge never seemed to be able to get the size right. The first gen reg cab was too small and the club cab was useless too except for reclining the front seats. Who wants jump seats in a full size? And the crew cab was rare and dropped before the diesel came out. Then the second gen club and quad cabs were better but still not great. Then the third gen quad cab was better still but not ideal and that's all you could get. Then instead of going a little bigger they go too big. Ford and GM had it right all along. Dodge experimenting with cab sizes is like Goldilocks with the porridge. Maybe now they'll finally find the one that's "just right".

I wonder how much market share Dodge lost with screwing around with these quirky cab configurations...

megacab existance ...
Think about it, they come out with a quad cab in '03 with the 8ft bed for the heavy haulers ... dodge then gets a lot of feedback from customers saying that the cab is too small.
Since they already have a 160.5" wheelbasee engineered, they take the short bed, and stick it on the quadcab long box wheelbase and stretch the cab to fit the short box ...
presto chango --- the largest cab in the industry on the cheap.

I'm sure cost of a seperate frame vs how much of a market there would be came into play...
Personally, if they had offered the mega cab in a long box, I suspect they would have sold more long box megas than short boxes-- especially if they made the wider and sharper turning front axle from the 4500 series an option so it would have a similar turning radius...

I was always a fan of the long bed. I don't use mine as a truck so much anymore so getting a Megacab short bed was fine with me. I have no problem dropping the tailgate if my load is longer than 6'. I think what they should have done was come out with an Excursion/Suburban type vehicle. Had they done that, then I would be driving one right now. Since they didn't, and I have two kids, I was happy with the Mega and would not go back to a QC if I didn't have to.
If a LB was offered with a Mega than I would be driving that right now though.

Could it be? Could the half-brained engineers at Dodge actually allow a real crew cab to exist?!!! That's what it looks like to me in the spy photos, true crew cab with a shortbed. Now I sure hope they offer a cc/lb.
Boom!! I've been thinking the same thing for a while.
I am shopping for a truck to replace my existing 03. Right now I am torn between an 02 or 03 7.3 CC or a Megacab. While I don't need the Megacab, I really would like another CTD, plus I can get a longer term and lower interest rate on an 06 Mega vs. a shorter term and higher rate with an older Ford, but with a cheaper initial price. That's why I wish Dodge would have just done it right from the get go with a real crew cab instead of this moronic quad cab.

Funny how you can actually seat more people in a QC than a MC.
The middle front seat of the QC is almost worthless, but in the MC it really is worthless with that big HVAC tunnel on the floor.
