Should I Buy?

I've finally found one that I like.

It is a 2000 Dodge 2500 Cummins Laramie. etx cab. 6 speed, long Box. 4x4

122,000 miles, 3:55 Gear Ratio, Heated Leather seats, New Shocks, tires, injector pump, track bar, no chips, 4" exhaust. No leaks, Rear Posi-traction, no leaks

One owner who is 80 years old, drives 55 on highways and never about 72 on the interstate. Garaged it's entire life. towed only a camper to go camping. Never worked hard. Maintanence records, they guy followed the recommended maintanence in the manual to the letter.

Mint int. Exellent ext.

You can tell it has truely been babied!!

In the 122,000 miles he has never replaced the brakes, and the brakes still have 50% left

Oil changed with shell 15-40 every 5,000 miles.

Has a 53 block, no cracks. . .

Need a ranch truck. Towing horse trailers, bailers, trackers, and round bails.

He is asking $15,000

I plan on keeping it till it drops dead.

I can find them cheaper, but wonder if paying an extra $3500 now will pay off in future mechanical costs since it has been babied so much.

What do you think?? I need to decide tonight

Thanks and I love the site!!

Nathan

Sounds like a nice truck. Just keep in mind that Injection pump and Lift pumps can fail on these trucks at any time regardless of age or usage.

If I was spending $15k on a truck and it had a 53 block, that would make me pass on it.

It was stated before that not every 53 block is going to crack, and most of them live long, happy lives trouble free.

If I had your $15k, I would find a minty 12v and go from there.

I compare the 53 block to the KDP in a 12v - but one can be prevented.

It sounds like a beautiful, well maintained truck that will offer you a long life of service.

If you could get the guy down to $13k, or so - even though that truck sounds like its worth every bit of $15k...

Do you need all the bells and whistles?

Knowing what I do now of the 24v VP44 trucks, I'd never buy one.

$15k in my hand right now would net me a BEAUTIFUL 12v.

Its ultimately your choice, but this is just an opinion.

I appreciate your opinion Bro.

I diffidently don't need all of the bells and wistles. But even without them these trucks are going for around 11,500 around here.

So apart from all of the extras, I'm starting to wonder if I'd save the extra $3,500 in the long run just on mechanical issues.

Thanks again Man

I agree that it is maybe a little high price in today's market, but not much. I have seen 3rd gens with under 100k going for under $18000, but probably not as mint as this one. For that kind of money, I would go with a 03 or 04, bigger cab, better brakes and suspension, more stock power.

There is an '02 in my town that's a 3500 AT 4wd with about the same mileage, in similage condition (not a scratch anywhere) that has a dealer asking price around 15k. This has the troublesome 47RE automatic, but it also has the rear disk brakes (01.5 & 02). It could probably be had out of this dealer for around 11.5, as diesel trucks are moving, but slowly.

The VP-44 is my concern more than the rest. If you do buy it, put a fuel psi gauge on it and monitor it. Sounds like a great truck, but maybe a little more than I would want as a work truck. Best of luck with your decision, perhaps you could look around more for a less expensive 12 valve in similar shape? They are always to be found on autotrader in some part of the country.

I agree with nirion. If I were going to spend that much money I would buy a 3rd gen.

I think the price is ok. I would pay $5000 more for a clean truck. It's worth every penny if it's been taken care of. Think about how much a new truck depreciates the first year. However... It has a 53 block and a VP44 pump, so pass.

Thats if you can find a good 12v. Around where I am, 12v's are hard to come by, a clean one even harder, and I don't think any mint ones exist.

it took me a year and a half to find mine and its an auto, i wanted a 5spd, but this one was clean with no rust and the interior was imaculate plus it only had 123,000, i got mine for $10k. Clean low milage 12valves are hard to come by for a reasonable price but can be found. If you like the truck buy it, its your money but you might end up regreting it with the vp44

Never mind the VP-44, that can be replaced, the 53 block would be my #1 concern!!! I would not buy it!!!!!

I sold my 1999 because it had a 53 block and I was too stupid to realize that when I first looked at it.....

I didnt want that in my head constantly (is it gonna crack, am I gonna get stranded because of an Injection Pump)

Too much to worry about, when there is already enough to worry about in life.

A diesel that has been babied isn't as good as you think it is. Personally I'd rather buy one that has been worked, within reason.

Why would you rather buy one that has been worked?

Thanks
