I now do all my pulls going forward. Also, I with what I do I just let it idle and that is enough. I figure that if I spin the wheels at idle then why should it be necessary to go faster?

Another update. Found out today that my new method with using the small strap around the trees works great. Just wrapped it around the base of the tree twice, hooked both ends to my big strap and pulled. Out comes the tree. In most cases it snaps the tap root. I am using 4 wd low and idle forward in first gear. Had around 150 gallons of water on the back which gave me extra traction. Only three trees gave me a hastle but by pulling from a slightly different direction they came out. Like pulling teeth. Seems weird when letting the truck idle forward when it stops with three wheels spinning. Pulled over 60 trees out today in preparation for a new section of road I want to build.

As far as pulling in forward using the trailer hitch, there were some suggestions for how to connect the tow strap. Would it be safe to buy a very large shackle and putting the pin for it through the hitch-pin in the receiver? This would transfer 100% of the load to the hitch-pin hole, but would that be safe? Or would be any more dangerous to the hitch than just inserting the hitch pin with the tow strap looped around it?

I suspect that if you bought a shackle large enough that the pin diameter would be too large for the hole.
When I am pulling the way I am, I use a half inch chain of about 3 feet long with chain hooks at each end. Chain capacity just over 5000 kgs so doubled it is over 10,000 kgs. No way I can break that. The gap in the hooks are a perfect fit for the thickness of the receiver and I hook both of them on the front of the receiver. Being such a good fit they never fall off. The chain goes thru one loop of the nylon strap. Have been watching the strap closely for damage such as cutting from the chain but so far it's good. The chain diameter is large enough not to damage the strap.

ARe you pulling them straight out or are you using the Pole or tire deal. I have some stumps to pull this spring and was wondering what has been the most successful?

Wonder if I could use my old gas tractor?

Any ideas on moving large rocks?
Thanks

For the majority of the trees I am just doing a straight pull. When they do not move that way I use the pole.
Large rocks, well, that is another story. I have that problem too.

you could tie bowline around object, only takes second and make a choker out of it. no matter how tight you pull it bowline will always come out easily. or get old choker from crane. i just use whatever to pull and i dont jerk my truck. if it wont come im not going to jerk rear end out trying. done that once. wont do it again. also i will hook 3 ton come-a-long and slowly remove object.

beamhanger, yes those would work. Believe it or not, but I could not buy a choker down here. Even went thru all the dealer cataogs and could not see any. Not even from Crosby. Anyway, what I have now works very well. I do not jerk my truck. Very carefull about that. The most I will do is let it idle forward in first and take up the slack in the nylon strap. A really large tree or stump will stop the truck but it stops gently and not with a jerk so figure that I am not hurting anything. When it stops three wheels start spinning. Guess this proves my LSD is working.

NO chains. A HDPE rope is what you want. They don't stretch much, they're tough as nails, and IF they break, the just fall harmlessly to the ground, no WHIPPPING.

The tire translates the horizontal pull from the truck into a vertical pull. Supposed to work pretty well....Id think a larger tire would be better.
This is what I've always done and it works great. The bigger the tire/wheel the better. My granddad and I used to use an old metal wagon wheel with a chain over the top of it and attached to a Farmall tractor to pull light poles out of the ground. That's where I learned the trick. Have used it many times on stumps, fence posts, trees and whatever else is in the ground that I want out.

I know I'm getting in on this post a little late....but still.

If you don't start out that way you're gonna end up that way so it doesn't matter much.
