Powerstroke questions
Powerstroke questions
My buddy at work has a 2000 powerstroke and has many problems with it. This thing uses LOTS of oil. The other day he was checking the oil. He only had 4,000 on the oil and filter. He checked the dipstick and there was not ANY oil on this thing. He has taken it to Ford 5 or more time with some of these problems and only 1 fixed.
The other day i walked into the shop and I heared his truck running. It was making an odd noise. You could hear the engine then a hiss and the wossssssssss then it would run fine, then again. Ford told him all of the 2000 did this.
I was wondering if you guys had ever heard this noise or could shed some light on this. Odd huh? I realy feel bad for him. the truck has only 30,000 miles on it and has had so many problems with it. Well thanks again guys. -Anthony
Re:Powerstroke questions
The amount of oil consumption that you are describing IMO is abnormally high for a PSD. It would be nice to have some background info. Any mods to the truck? Chips, tuners, drugs, turbo, injectors??

First thing I would do is if the truck is stock take it back to the dealership about the oil consumption problem and get at least a compression test done. The truck only has 30,000 miles and this problem should be covered under warranty. A buddy of mine had a similar problem with oil consumption, his did however smoke slightly when it was started. He had low compression on three cylinders (bent rods) and the dealer put in a new motor. I think the motor only had about 15,000 miles on it.

The noise that you hear may be the EBV (I think that is what it is called) valve on the back side of the turbo. Ford came up with a butterfly valve on the exhaust side on the turbo to assist warm-up. On a stock exhaust you can hear it, but if he has a 4" or bigger exhaust it is much louder. The fact that it comes and goes might be that he was idling too long and the truck cooled off or the truck was just getting warm. Mine use to do this with the stock turbo. Do you know was the truck in high idle when you heard this? I know this feature was on the 2001 and up trucks but I am not sure if the 2000 had this.

The stock turbo on the 99.5 and up PSD is not that great even in a completely stock truck. I found that with only a few airbox modifications and nothing else I could get the turbo to stall under certain conditions with the stock unit. I have run a Bully Dog Big Woof turbo with great results. It did lower EGT's, I had more boost and no compressor stall that I could find. I have also heard that the "Van" turbo for the PSD is suppose to work very well as well as the H2E (higher HP trucks, some lag issues though). This is what I have heard about the last two and like I said I have never used them. There may be some other turbos out there for the PSD as it seems in the last year the aftermarket is starting to develop more stuff for us now. Actually, I have done some testing with another turbo that Rod at Wildcat may sell in the near future. The turbo is in the testing stage and so far from a performance stand point it looks promising.
Re:Powerstroke questions
Yeah his truck is bone stock. He said he might be going to a different dealer real soon. Thanks for all the info. guys. Thanks so much. if you guys have anything else about the 2000 powerstroke. Mods and problems. Thanks -Anthony
Re:Powerstroke questions
Run don't walk away from that dealer. If there is not a competent Ford dealer nearby take it to an International Truck dealer, you are probably already aware that the 7.3L Powerstroke is the same as (well, almost the same as) a Navistar T444E.

Cheers
