Pathetic attempt at saving money, I guess...
On my way to work this morning I saw a dually 3rd gen Ram 3500 pulling a car hauler. The truck, however, did not have tires on the inside on the rear... just wheels.

I saw one of these not too long ago. Only issue here was he had a trailer on it loaded with enough junk to make Sanford and Son drool. If I remember right though, this guy had the inner tire. It was just way smaller that the outer tire. Didn't reach the ground. I had to do a double take. It looked awful hidious.
There are people who will remove two of their rear tires if they are going to make a long unloaded trip or they are planning on driving in the snow a lot. The idea with each is to decrease the contact patch to get lower rolling resistance and better bite into the snow.
Unloaded and looking for better fuel economy...mmmm, ok maybe. But loaded and only one rear? Don't these people realize that the manufacturer put "duals" on the rear for a reason?? Stupid people...how can we purge the earth of them?

I have a Ford 4x4 dually that I put a set of SRW wheels/tires on for the winter. I do not tow my trailers in heavy snow or much if at all in the winter, the SRW setup stays more in the tracks of other vehicles which is a little safer. I have known several people who will run SRW wheels/tires when not using their duallys for hauling. It also saves on the cost of wearing that extra pair of tires when their weight value is not needed.
Yes, it does look stupid, but done right it is functional.

single rear wheels
In Mass.you can run a one ton vehicle with single rear wheels and use a regular plate . As soon as you have dual wheels you become commercial vehicle and have to pay for a weighted plate( so much per thousand) My truck was not legaly registered and when I got stopped (close to home) the officer told me if I took it straight home he wouldn't give me a ticket and to bring the truck into the police station the next day with the right plate on it which I did. Turns out my insurance company screwed up and I could have got my hand slapped hard if the officer had wanted to do it. Maybe that is why you see single rears on a dually.
My uncle got a flat on the inside dual one time without knowing it and ran it till the rubber was gone!
He still hadn't noticed when I pointed it out to him, the other dual was really low. I have seen allot of guys with flat or low inner duals. Guess they only check the tire they can see
Maybe the guy had run em raw?
Thats my .02

I ran into a guy with a guy with a 92 D250 (SRW ofcourse) a week ago. One rear wheel was a offset dualie running low rider style in the outside postion. Also I came across an old suburban that had offset dualies on all 4 wheels. People do some crazy stuff.
I have thought about getting some SRW rims/tires for mine when I'm not towing. You just have to put some big fat tires on it or it looks goofy....
Anybody got pics of a combo like this? I've seen a few and it looks pretty good.....

You see that a lot around here, they take off the inside wheel and run spacers or the empty rim.....
I've had a couple of them tell me it save mpg and such, but I don’t really see how it would, I mean compared to the truck the rolling weight of those tires can’t make that much difference....
Now if it makes a difference in handling in snow/slush type thing, I might do it myself... I don’t pull the trailer much in the winter....
