OK, so other than filters, and normal aftermarket parts, I have had two occasions when I needed a specific part for my engine. This has happened both times: I call to check stock, they have a hard time looking the info up, even with the cpl number, engine number, etc. They then give me part numbers that "have been changed to another number, superceeded by this number, no wait, it's this number, it's Dodge only, no wait it's cummins, no it's fleetgaurd, no wait it's discontinued", blah, blah, blah.

This has happened when I needed to replace my water in fuel sensor, and now it has happened again when trying to replace my fuel heater element.

Never did get the water in fuel sensor, I was told it is obsolete, so I ended up making one.

Now, I am playing the phone call game for the fuel heating element, and it blows my mind that I can't get an answer. I gave them old part numbers, new part numbers (part numbers that reputable members of this site have given me). The last guy I spoke to told me anything from, no longer available, to number is changed, to need to buy a whole new fuel strainer setup.

How do other people on this site do it? I am getting frustrated. I guess I am looking for a place that sells Cummins/fleetgaurd parts and knows a thing or two about the Dodge/Cummins combination. Man there has got to be an easier way! Kevin

 

Hope this helps a little anyway. I do not have cummins part numbers but here are the Dodge numbers. Fuel heater 4762067 $265.00 and water sensor 4882437 $135.00. May be cheaper at cummins not sure but these numbers should get you closer to what you are looking for. Not sure why others have such a problem these parts are cut and dry when looking up for your truck.

Its hard to find a good parts guy these days. Yep, we got one, according to the computer. Ok, now go look and see if you really have the part!

 

That reminds me of a joke I saw in a parts mag. The guy behind the counter said to the customer :"I don't care IF you are pointing at it. The computer says it is not here!!".

 

Thanks for the dodge part numbers. But, they are way high in prices, like almost $200 bucks to high for the heater and $100 bucks to high for the water sensor.

Exactly why I tried Cummins first. Nothing against the dealer, but I work to **** hard for my money.

So how about some names and numbers of Cummins/Fleetgaurd dealers that know a little about our trucks? What places do people have good luck with?

Sure would like to build up a list of names and numbers to have for future parts searches. Kevin

 

I gave the numbers in another thread that someone else said was wrong.
Bought the heater element with that number from Cummins Northwest less than a year ago for $48

 

Yes, Bill, thanks. Thats the only number that worked. They did say it was a discontinued number, but they had one at there location 120 miles away (left over stock).

They could not offer me a replacement number. The other guy I called said he had no parts numbers listed for the fuel heater. Kind of tough isn't it?

Even though I have the part coming, it burns me that I am told "the part is discontinued" and others state "they just bought one".

I think I might try Cummins northwest next time I need something. Anyone else have some suggestions? Kevin

 

Infidel, I too just bought the parts using the part numbers I posted less than a month ago.

I have had the same issues with the local cummins shop. They tried to sell me a complete injection pump cuz they said they couldn't get just the overflow valve. well, when I called them back with the part number for the overflow valve, they suddenly could get it alone.

Same thing with the fuel heater...they tried to sell me a complete assembly, ubntil I gave them the part number for the kit. I then went to diff local diesel shop (www.industrialdiesel.com) and got the part for about 30% less than cummins wanted for it.

 

I don't have any troubles with the parts guys at the local Cummins NPower. I know they have troubles with the parts computers because it will state N/A or obsolete part and yet they hand me the part from stock.

The local Dodge dealer evens buys piece parts from Cummins if the MOPAR catalog only gives complete items.

I think my advantage is 2 savy parts guys and that Mike's Custom Trucks (local diesel shop) purchases most of their engine parts from Cummins NPower.
