Oil Thread

There was a HUGE thread on the new oil and how it compares to the old stuff. It wasn't that long ago. I searched but can't find it. Can someone post a link?

The new oil is doing well. You don't really have a choice anyway...

The big question is Where can you get the CI-4+ oil?

Specifically Valvoline Premium Blue.

The only place I've seen Premium Blue is at the Cummins dealer and they usually have specials on it.
We used to run it at work in a fleet of buses with M-11 engines @ 17,000 mile intervals. A salesman came by one day and said he had a non synthetic oil that performs just as good as the Premium Blue. My boss said "Ok, well give it a try". It was Chevron Delo 400. I accidentally let one slip by and it reached 32,000 miles so I had a sample sent out. Came back A-O-K . I currently have the change intervals @ 25,000 miles only because I still need to get under the buses and lube the chassis and adjust brakes. It took 5 or 6 months to aquire 32,000 miles and I wasn't comfortable with not giving them the once over for that length of time, besides the fact that they now have 500,000 - 750,000 total miles on the engines without any major repairs.

Also, I don't know how they based their pricing in the table. We get the Delo 400 in 55 gallon drums and it comes in @ less than $8.00/gallon before taxes.

I use the Delo 400 in my '02 5.9, so I'm glad it's where it is on the chart.

They did not test the Schaeffers oils? Hmmm, is it that rare?

Finding the Premium Blue isn't the problem as it is available from my local NAPA and Schucks. The problem is the last stuff I bought was CJ4 not the CI4+. I can only find the CJ4 rated oil. After reading the link to the oil analysis the CI4+ is a superior oil for all engines prior to the 6.7 liter.

Smile Truck stop

I recently had trouble finding a suitable synthetic eng oil and was driving past a big rig truck stop so I went in. They had a small rack in the back loaded with different oils most of them diesel but they only had like one or two jugs each, so I asked and they said "oh yeh we keep it in the back how much do you want?"

As I was paying I got talking to a trucker who chipped in and said he uses the same oil I was buying in his freightliner and highly recommended it. It was also over $14 a 4 liter jug cheaper than I had been paying. From now on they have my business.

CI-4+ oil contains more additives than CJ-4. The only benefit I can see from CJ-4 oil is that it can hold soot a little better. What you can do (if you have CI-4+ oil in your garage) is add a gallon of CI-4+ to 2 gallons of CJ-4 to boost the additive pack when you change the oil. That way you don't deplete your CI-4+ supply and still have a good blend of oil.
