I just read an article in Hot Rod that was talking about how the automotive grade oils have had much of the anti friction components (zinc and others) removed for emissions purposes, and that as soon as the EPA forces all diesels to run catalysts Rotella et all will also have these modifiers removed. Apparently there has been a rash of mecanical cam lobe/tappet failures in the last three years.

I emailed Cummins and asked them about it and this was the reply: "We don't have any kind of information regarding your question. Sorry."

Nice huh?

No more Penzoil for me. Rotella T from now on.

These are permanent changes, not unlike removing tetraethyl lead from gasoline. The manufactures will have to come up with coping strategies...

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck is the Mobil 1 consumer formulation recommended for our trucks. The commercial Mobil Delvac 1 formulation is still available as well.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck and Mobil Delvac 1 are only available in SAE 5W-40.

Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is no longer diesel-rated as of earlier this year - see if the new bottle carries a CI-4 or higher SAE service classification. It was replaced by the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck formulation for diesel service.

I think the original question was what synthetic to use in the transmission.

In that case, please accept my apologies for responding to skchevota's questions. I'll try not to let it happen again.

NAPA carries Valvoline Synthetic Extreme which is endorsed by Cummins which I've switched to since Walmart does not carry the truck and suv formula in 5w 40 in my area anymore. I've been running Syn for the last 80,000.

Mobil 1 5W-40 Truck and SUV has been replaced by Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck. It should be hitting the shelves soon if it's not already there.
