oil filter split

On a trip to indianapolis this past summer my 2002 dodge ctd lost all oil pressure. I immediatly shut the truck down and pulled to the side of the road and proceeded to get out and check for the problem. I seen a puddle of oil under the engine but couldnt tell where it was coming from. upon further inspection i noticed the oil filter had a split about 1/2 inch long. it had drained all the oil from my truck and caused the check guages light to come on. i called 911 and they dispatched an officer to pick me up and take me to wal mart and get new oil & oil filter and the rest of the trip went off without a hitch. Anyone else ever had an oil filter split on their cummins? if so what brand was it? the filter that split on me was a wix.

WoW I have never heard of a filter splitting. I have seen the gasket blow out when the pressure relief valve on the oil pump stuck.

What I'm even more surprised is that LEO picked you up at took you to Walmart to get supplies!

I haven't heard of oil filters splitting but I have heard of fuel filters splitting. It happened to me with a napa brand filter and it split around the crimped area at the top. It was only seeping fuel though, not gushing.

Not to knock brand names or anything but the only filter I ever had split was a Fram brand. I use WIX exclusively (air, oil, trans, fuel) and have never had a failure like that on any of them in over 30 yrs.
I bet WIX would love to have that filter for analysis!
Also, if you rread on the back of the box, you'll find that Napa brand are made by WIX which is Dana Corp. Same filter.

There's your problem. Fram just aint what it used to be. Get Fleetgaurd from Geno's and you'll never need to have this discussion again.

(I order two oil and two fuel each time) Imagine if the wife was driving and she decided to try to make it on home. You'd be having a pointless argment about some sort of warranty with an oil filter maker in Indonesia somewhere right about now.

Fleetguard filter splitting was a big problem when the 24 valves first came out in '98.5. A new heavier duty filter was introduced due to the higher than previous models oil pressure on start up.

I have a wix on my truck and I heard they are cotton inside. Cat mechanic told me this said it could void my warranty and that his friend's truck wasn't covered for something blah, blah, blah....

You get the point.

Anyone else hear bad things about wix.

I'll try fleetguard next time.

I don't think the Wix is cotton filled. When in doubt, cut the **** things open and look!

this was at 2;30 am, i had to be at the airport by 5:00 am so i didnt have much of a choice when it came to selection. keep in mind though the filter that busted was not a fram from wal mart, but a wix that i bought at the local heavy equip parts store.

I had an oil filter split along the seam at the top. it was a NAPA and it was almost new. Boy, what a mess!

My next filter was a fleetguard from the Cummins shop.
