To split or not to split...

Hi everyone, Happy Holidays to one and all !!!

I have an '02 with the 6 speed trany and 4.10 gears and I am not happy with the setup. Too high rpms cruising at 75+.
I do nopt carry any heavy loads not do I tow ( a bike trailer maybe in the future). Having said that my question is:
Would it be better to add an aux tranny (gear splitting) from Gear Vendors to change the ratios in the diffs. By my research the total pricing is comparable so which is the better solution? Any of you have the gear splitter? Are you happy with it?

All comments and sugestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Peter

Re:To split or not to split...

What are your RPM'S at 65,70,75mph?

I have the same rig as you except I have the 3.55 gears.

65mph=1950rpms
70mph=2190ish
75mph=2300ish

Re:To split or not to split...

I'd love to have 3.55s. That with a taller tire would be perfect for me.

At 2600 rpm I am at 78 mph. I would like to be at 2000 rpm.
Now at 2000 rpm it is at 60 mph on the nose.

mcmlv Why do you need the lower gears if you are not towing anything heavy?

I would go with a gear change over an overdrive.....I have heard of the GV overdrives breaking.

A friend of mine has had his break, he left it off, now.

The 94 that I just brought home from Arkansas has the 4;10 gears with the Gear Vendor OD. It works very well and drops the rpm's somewhere around 450 when you go into OD. He really likes it.

Re:To split or not to split...

I am running 3.55 gears, 5 speed, and 35 inch tires.

Essentially I feel like I have "gained" a gear. As I don't do much towing, 1st gear is now "usable", and 5th is highway only. After discussing my future hp plans with the good folks at Haisley, the only thing I may do gear wise is add a locker in the rear.

I adapted my driving style to boot, and actually noticed increased mpg.

Since I have added the Edge Drag Comp (wire not yet pierced), this thing is really cool to drive.

This is all coming from a first time, newly accredited, hp junkie. Need more money....

Re:To split or not to split...

I have the Gear Vendors Overdrive unit in my 94 Diesel NV4500-5 speed suburban. This is an outstanding unit and I am very pleased with it BUT !!! Its costs a meduim fortune!!!! $2,800 new!!! That is just crazy and there is absolutely no chance of payback in less than 500,000 miles of driving. I got lucky and found mine at an equipment auction new in the box for $600 !! Otherwise I would never pay 2,800 for one

Re:To split or not to split...

You don't show any info about your tires!! I also have the 4.10 in my 01.5 and I run 285/75/16 I figure my final drive with the tire change is closer to the 3.73. my rpms are about 2150 at 70mph which seems much lower than yours. The least expensive fix is to change tire size to suit. The DML tire calculater will give you some options you could consider. remember as you change tire sizes you will need to calcutate new speed and the posts I have read suggest the truespeed is the way to go. any power loss on the bottom could be corrected with some bombs to increase the low end torque. Then by keeping the stock tires you could go back to them if you start to tow heavy for some reason or for drag racing

Re:To split or not to split...

Why do you care what the RPM's are at speed? Unless you just have the 3 grand burning a whole in your pocket, Who cares if you might get 1-2 mpg more with the Gear Vendor? If it is just another "TOY" then good go get it, if not hell I love the way the Cummins screems at me.

Re:To split or not to split...

We have 2 identical trucks. Both 98 12v exactly the same except my dad's has 3.54's or whatever and 33" tall tires. I have 4.10's and 30" tires. He gets 21-23mpg around 70mph I get about 12-13. I would need over 38" tires to make up the gear differance. From what the 4x4 shop here told me I can get my gears changed for like 1000$ thats a whole lot cheaper then a GV over drive and less crap to break Its what I would do anywho. We dont pull or haul anything.

Re:To split or not to split...

I have a 92. It had 3:54 gears. I recently installed 3:73 and I love them. I dont have a tach but for some reason I cant hardly keep it under 80 MPH ;D It seems that im not working the engine as hard with the new gears. I have 215-85-16 tires. My other 92 has 4:10 gears and they are just too low ratio. I guess it is just a preference
Good Luck
