A coworker of mine's a real VW fan. He's got an 06 getting around 500 miles to a tank. His previous TDI was an 01 or 02, it got another 130 miles to the same sized tank.
Seems the newer these diesels get, the poorer the mileage......similar to the CTD.

The great oil debate on 04+ Pumpe Duces. VW has discontinued the 505.01 5w40 castrol. It has been replaced with a 5w30 (GLX if I recall). I have done much research and found that the Mobil 1 5w30 or 5w40 ESP is 505.01, 504.00 and 507.00 compatible + it's cheaper.

We have a 05.5 jetta tdi with dsg. I just went to the dealer to get some oil and a filter. He stated that the only place you can get the castrol txt 505.01 was at the Audi dealers now. VW is replacing that with the 5w-30 but he said it was a little thin for Phoenix and recommended 5w-40. He stocks the Motul 505.01 5w-40 oil so that's what I got! We're getting ready to turn 50K miles on ours and it gets about 39mpg average combined driving. It's a great little car with a lot of standard bells and whistles!

I would double check that with tdiclub.com. VWoA doesn't agree with that last time I heard.

VW did a search for the most miles on a diesel jetta in the US and they found this one with 562,000

I just went 546 miles on 13 gallons (42 mpg) So I am happy
I know the 01-04 Jettas were smaller and I would guess lighter. Kind of like the older Dodge Rams are lighter then the 03+. I think that has some bearing on the Fuel milage.
I have had the car for 1 week and already have 1,980 miles
