It's about MORE POWER and a new 6speed auto. Oh, yeah new chassis also, c channel type with a 52 gallon fuel tank and an 22 gallon aux tank available. Just wait, the next thing down the line is the 4500 & 5500. They will also probably also offer this engine in the regular 3500 and keep the 5.9 in the 2500 and maybe even in the 1500

Awww.. they better not "cheapen" up the Cummins by putting it in a half ton truck. If I recall correctly, Chevy in the mid 90's (maybe still?) offer their diesel in the 1500. Let Dodge 1500 owners have their "4 cylinder" HEMI. Better yet, bring back the 318!!- one of the best Mopar gassers ever!

My folks had a Ram Charger with the carburated 318. We all loved that thing, but the 318 never impressed us. Other friends who had them had suggested the 360. For the extra 1 or so MPG loss, it would have been well worth it- we lived in in the mountains at the time.

The only thing the 318 ever had going for it was reliability and durability. Those are very good things, but they always get poor mileage. I've never figured out why. Even the V6 that was a cut down 318 got terrible mileage.
The 360 is a great engine and in the applications I've seen it, it always did better than the 318. I've checked this out for years starting with my '74 Power Wagon 360, my '83 318, my Dakota, my friends 360s and my friends 318s. Always the same thing, the 360 is just more efficient. And has more power. Always pick the 360 if you have a choice.

I had a new 68 Sport Satellite with a 318 that got great fuel mileage and was a decent performer for ordinary driving. The 360 was a gas hog with a lot less power than the competetion, eg, GM 350.

the 6.7 is about pleasing the epa and still maintaining power you love. I too suspect the 4500/5500 with the aisin trans. fact ,the 2500/3500 trucks will be with the 48re till the 68rfe comes on line. look for a v configuration engine in the half tons, as cummins has built a v-6 and v-8

V6 and a V8- - - - Where have you heard this. Better yet, where have you read this. I heard something a while back about Cummins Building a smaller V6 Diesel to power the 1500 line-up. If you look at the Sema Show Results you will see that Dailmer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, will all be running a new Blue-Tec Diesel in the next two years. If they put a diesel in the Dakota or Durango I will Definatly be buying one.

the v engine is speculation, as far as dodge using it. I seen a 1500 with one (v-8). same truck is in pics and small story in TDR issue 46 . last I knew of no one had bought the engines yet, who will?

I just have to lend a bit of confusion to this topic!

The Blue-Tec is a DaimlerChrysler copyrighted clean burn diesel technology based on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Cummins uses a slightly different technology that relys on a particulate screen and a controlled burn using an external combustion event fired by the fuel charge from the engine during particular low load periods to clean the catalyst.

As far as I know the only 2007 on-highway emissions standards compliant light/lower medium duty Cummins engine is the 6.7. The current EPA certification on the 6.7 is for a GVW range higher than that of the present 2500 series, so I would not look for that engine in the 2500 and lighter series trucks, at least in its current configuration.

Given the emission constraints of the future, I would also expect the much talked about new line of true medium duty (4500 and up) Dodge trucks to use the DaimlerChrysler's MB Blue-Tec engine technology from one of their in-house suppliers, Detroit/MB or VM-Motori S.p.A.

I believe it is still be a crap shoot as to what diesel will be available for the 2500 series of light trucks. No matter which engine makes it, it will still be a vast improvement over any of the gas engines available, and it will be squeaky clean to deal with the environmental issues in a responsible manner.

For the lighter passenger and SUV type vehicles from DaimlerChrysler look to VM-Motori S.p. A., which has already delivered over half a million diesels to DaimlerChrysler's automotive divisions, and is presently used by Jeep in the US.

For those of you that follow the industry, VM-Motori S.p.A. is a Roger Penske controlled corporation that was carved out of Detroit Diesel in 2003, about the time Allison was returned to GM, and close to the time that MTU and MB diesels came under the Detroit umbrella. VM-Motori S.p.A. is 51% owned by the Penske Group and 49% owned by DaimlerChrysler.

All in all, it will be an interesting and exciting time for diesel guys in the coming months.
