Need Diesel Advice for Upgrade

I currently own a 97 2500 series Diesel with 60K on the clock.
I am considering an upgrade to a 2001-2002 2500 series with a club cab
I need to be able to haul 6500pds (goose neck) what should I look at.
My 97 is cramped and wanders a bit under load. I also want a bit more power
Suggestions

Club Cab, to me, means 4 full doors...which would require a 3rd Gen truck...2003 and up.

If you mean an extended cab (2 full, 2 half doors and a back seat) I would recommend a 2002 (last year of 2nd Gen trucks) with the towing package, manual tranny and an Edge EZ for nice power add on.

I guess I do mean 4 full doors, we haul to a lot of horse shows with two teenage girls, its just very hard with the set up I have now. I probably would go with a short bed. too and 4W drive. What will a 3rd gen pull (diesel or gas)
Suggestions with that information?

if you need 4drs, you need an 03+

the truck will be an upgrade... the engine will be a downgrade

definately get the Cummins, it'll pull whatever you've got

6500lbs is nothing i pull my friends bulldozer without a problem and it ways about 16000-17000lbs. i would stay with a 12v more reliable find a 98 12v ext cab, but if you want 4 full doors you'll have to get an 03 or newer. your 97 is capable of more power than you think

Ebay is a good place to look. Love my 03, it pulls 6500 lbs with ease and handles like it is on rails. The quad cab is only 4 inches shorter in the back seats then the Ford SD. The rear doors open a full 90 degrees for easy in and out and the windows go all the way down. I have never ridden back there myself, but remembering back to my teenage days, there shouldn't be much to complain about. Beats riding in an extended cab, or walking.

Check out newest advertiser on "Main Page", unless you have a local dealer you like.

Most First Generation Owners seem hopelessly hooked on their trucks. I probably would be too if I had taken the time and energy to learn all about them.

Most Second Generation Owners are the same way...and very happy, as am I. First Generation trucks scare me a little cause I don't really know much about how to work on them.

If you need the full four doors (third Generation), check out the comments on the third Generation threads...think you will fine good loyalty and very happy owners there also.

You are looking at about 1625 lbs in pin weight for a 6500 lbs gooseneck trailer with 25% pin weight. For that, and if you go to a larger trailer, you will probably need a dually to be under GVWR with all the passengers. I have a 2003 2500 quad cab, longbed and the payload is rather low, offically.

I screwed up when I said 6500 pds. I actually have about 9000 pds behind me when I fully load the 3 horses and gear. This is where I find the rear end slop and pull up hills low. I think I will post on 03 thread on pulling capacity. Thanks
