General Diesel DiscussionTalk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.
That is one of my favorite trucks. However as Fordzilla said not to sure it can handle the front end weight without some significant beefing up. While I have no idea if it would fit even a cummins 4bt weighs in at 750lbs which would probably be under powered for a truck that size, a 6bt is more along the lines of 900lbs your average chevy 350 motor is more along the lines of 550 lbs. Going to be way cheaper and way easier to work on or even replace with the vernerable 350.
Those are known for weak injector pumps and low power output...They usually used GM TH200 transmissions...Just remember a 52 year old frame likely has its rust issues and weak spots...Any diesel is going to produce more torque than the truck's original gasser; that is why I originally mentioned it and the suspension......Ben
yes i have been loking and it is easaly repairable and have been getting that done im lucky the frame isnt gone but the interior ....... thats a different story
Well, my take on it is that if you want to do a real conversion to a modern diesel powerplant you will need to reinforce everything ( frame, brakes, suspension etc) to at least 3 times beefier than what you have now.
Or you could go for something that has the same realistic power as the stock engine, and get a 1.9l TDI at 105 hp and not overstress said components.
The clever way to go IMHO would be to either repair the stock engine or to replace it with something that has the same power and stays within the same torque and hp as the stock unit.
Do not forget that this truck was built for virtually empty roads, and low speeds. Upping the power will lead to a host of new problems.
My first truck is a 1968 chevy k10 and i wanted to do a diesel convertion but i dont know a turbo diesel that will fit my truck
truck not man enough for an 5.9 ? Get you a Mercedes diesel!! High output in a small space ! They can put out over 300+ hp , and the torque will be easier on your smaller frames/ transmission
