Looken for a new rig

Im looking for a new rig. So lets hear your guys expert opinions on the years.

I know i want a Cummins, manuel, probably 02 or older (price wise unless i can find a smoking deal) Id go with a higher gear since id be doing more long distance wanting better fuel milage etc.

Im more curious about your guys opinion betweens the 12 and 24 valve engines ive heard a lot of different stuff. Which ones are more reliable etc. Also id be looking at turning it up just a little not incrediably just enough so that if i wanted to i could make that cute girl wish shed choicen the redneck over the ricer. lol

Additionally ive been already done some looking and i keep on running into this gear ratio thing. Im looking at an 02 at the moment with a 6sp and the dealer tells me its got 3:73 in it. unfortunetly i wasnt smart enough to at the time look under the hood and check the card. So im am curious what years had what gears? because ive run into this before.

Thank you

I've got a 98 12v EXT Cab for sale!!!!!

It all depends what you want!!! If you want power and reliablity then you want a 12v, 24v's are good but more upkeep is needed with the vp and it costs a little more to upgrade.

Its all in price and condition. I'm looking for a 2nd gen 12V. They are easier and cheaper to maintain. I know problems can occur for all trucks but there is so much for electronics on the newer trucks that can become complicated-which is why I want a 12V. Don't get me wrong I've owned some newer diesel trucks and loved them and never had a single problem. Also I want something different because all I've owned are Fords.

Lately I've been lookin and a ton of people want an arm and a leg for their truck, even with a ton of miles?? I don't get it. I'll just keep lookin till I find a good deal.

01.5-02 came with rear disc brakes. They also eliminated the front axle vacuum disconnect. I've never owned a 24v, but try searching for info on the "53" block. I'd still own my 12v if it had been a quadcab. Quadcab started in 98'. Not all 98'/99' are Quad. Some are Clubcab-no suicide doors. I prefer manual transmission. The small input shaft 6spd started in 99'. The 6spd was upgraded for 00'. The problem with the 12v is low mileage rigs are getting rare. It's not the engine that wears out, it's the Dodge that wears out.

One more thing to take into consideration is noise, if it matters to you, the older cummins are pretty loud
