Keep 1992?? Or move up to 2002??
Keep 1992?? Or move up to 2002??
I purchased my 92 LE, 4x4, 5spd, regular cab in 1992 and now has approximately 107,000 Km ( 65,000 miles) on the odometer. Although my wife is an excellent driver she absolutely refuses to drive a stick shift. The truck is in excellent condition and the only reason I am thinking of replacing it is that I would like to get an automatic so that she can drive . I test drove a new 2002 auto short box 4x4 which would meet our requirements. So now I am in a quandary? Should I keep my reliable 1992 or move up to the 2002?
Cheers,
Al
Who's gonna drive it more you or her. That would be the major question, my wife can drive a stick she just doesn't like drivin my truck. She wants her own instead of her SUV if you can keep the one and get the other for her or at least tell her that in order to justify the new truck

Sell your old one to me I need a plow truck, its really tough to go back to a 93 or older for a highway cruiser after driving 2nd gen there so nice and smooth in comparison. Want a new one wait until eveybody has test driven 03 then buy 04 with upgrades included. PK

get her a new one and you will have to get her any way from vp44 failure

If the ONLY reason for wanting to replace the truck is to get an automatic tranny, I'd keep it. But, I wouldn't own anything with Dodge automatic in it anyway.

I agree, wait.
The way I see it, about 2001 was kind of a high for the 24 valve engines. They still had Dana axles, and basically were well along in the process or working out the bugs introduced with the 12V-to-24V switch. You're getting an auto, and the 2002 doesn't have Dana axles, doesn't yet have the "new improved" auto that is being promised, and the engine is even noisier than your '92, if you care about such things.
In my mind, promise to buy the wife an 2004 or 2005.

Question, none of my business, but: Could she drive the stick in an "emergency", like if you were injured and needed to be transported to the hospital? I personally believe that everyone has a right to chose not to drive a stick, but, should be CAPABLE of handling a stick in an emergency. You might suggest it to her if the topic can be discussed. She wouldn't have to get good at it - just be able to get the truck rolling and shift to a higher gear so that she could get up to speed.
