Inspection time - Muffler delete issues - Texas

Went for an inspection today. Got turned down because of no muffler. Never have had a problem before. This time around the guy said, "The rules changed back in September."

Does anyone know is Texas has raised its standards on diesel exhaust?

Where did you get inspected at? The regs have been that way for a while, but a lot of shops still don't check. My cousin runs a shop in Central Texas and he hasn't inspected my truck in 4 years because I've got a straight pipe and he's completely by the book.

Did they fail it, or just tell you they won't do it without a muffler? If they failed you, you're flagged in the system and they're the only shop that can clear it when you resolve the issues noted when you failed.

They began the inspection by driving it from the front of the shop to the back. Once at the back, a man looked at it for all of a minute and turned it arround. I dont think the guy began punching up documents, i think he just rejected me. I guess Ill find out today if they did or not.

Can you have a straight pipe in Texas? I'm pulling my camper to San Antonio in a couple of weeks and don't want any trouble. Think I'll be ok?

Just passing through you should be fine. It's the annual vehicle inspection that gets you depending on how thorough the inspection station is.

In Texas, all vehicles have to have a muffler and a catalytic converter if it came factory equipped. Lot's of bad info out there, the most common being, "Diesels don't need mufflers."

That's just what I was going to suggest! They won;t check it out. They only need to see the can there.

Had mine inspected last month in Houston at Sticker-Stop.

I have a muffler, the cat is long gone, but with the current stack it is loud. They have never even looked under my truck. Drive a block down the street, then back into the stall, check all lights, look at tires and put the sticker on. Used this place the last four years.

My guy just scans the barcode on the door and applies the sticker. other than strait pipe, it will always pass.

I ran my 99 for years w/out a muffler, installed one to "try" and quiet things a little but it really did no good. Inspections from several different places and none even looked under the truck or questioned it.

Im from S'ville and interested to know who turned you down. In 30 years my family has never failed a inspection in S'ville. By chance are you a TSU student with TSU stickers on your truck??

Most states require a muffling device; however, in some states, the turbo serves that purpose. Anyone know what the wording of the Texas statute is?
