I need an Intervention!

I am starting to consider....a Ford PSD! I have been on the look out for a nice '98 12v since Feb, and during that time my patience has begun to run out, and my eyes have started to wander.... I need someone to talk me down from the ledge. I am not brand loyal really, I have been on this site and some PSD sites, and I know from a mechanical stand point, the Cummins wins hands down. Not that PSD's are bad, just not as good it seems. So I think if I went with a Ford, I would be compromising or settling on a truck. It's just they are more readily available around here it seems. Honestly, I am not trying to start a Ford bashing thread, I just figured to have a truck by now.

As long as you stay away from the 6.0 and the 6.4 you'll be fine. I'd say look harder for a 12 valve though. I think you'd be alot happier with the big bad Cummins than a Furd Super Dookie PowerJoke Duhzl. I'm not biased really.

If someone gave me a 7.3 - I'd give it back... with friends like that, who needs enemies?

Id take a 7.3, but id WAY rather have a 12 valve. Why do you need a 98?? Will a 96 or 97 not do?

Do a nationwide search on auto trader, plug in "diesel" for fuel and give it the years, and you'll come with with hundreds of options. Travel to get the right one, and watch out for rust. If one is near a member here they may be able to give it a look-over for you. Good luck - be patient!

Why not get an 01' or 02'? I swore I would never drive a 24v but I own one now. I believe the VP44 is something that can managed with a little maintence. My 01.5 has disk brakes and a fairly smooth ride for being a 3/4 ton truck.

If your not brand loyal now go ahead and buy a Ford. After your done kicking your own *** you will be brand loyal to some other brand other than Ford.

if ur only option is a 98 12v because the short bed, it's gonna be hard to find since thats a very saught after truck. It might be worth getting another year 12v and selling the camper to get one that fits the truck u get, lol.

I would get a 24 valve before a Powerstroke.

I don't hate the 7.3 but even with the VP44 I think the Cummins is a better engine - especially if we are talking pre-99 Powerstrokes. Not that I wouldn't take a diesel Excursion if it was free...

I personally liked my 2002 7.3 better than the 99 cummins I had for awhile. plenty of power and never let me down. I am not brand loyal myself. I think ford and dodge build the best trucks out there, and the only reason I got the dodge was because a manual tranny + the 6oh just doesn't work very well together.
