How long has the 5.9 been around
It was a joint venture between Case and Cummins in the early '80's. It was designed as a modular engine from the beginning, there were both 4 and 6 cylinder engines planned. It was first used in Case power equipment. There were 4B's in bread trucks as early as '84.
Although it doesn't say when Cummins started building the B series, here is a great artice on them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cummins_B_Series_engine
I think I have read somewhere that the 5.9L had its beginnings in the mid 60's.

I know for sure case used the 3.9 and 5.9 in 90 when they came out the the 5100 series , and later in the 5200 series. they changed injection pumps and continued to use it up into the MX series. They also used it in their construction equipment , and their combines.
backhoe
I work at a powergeneration station and back when , the plant was first built, (I have worked for the company for 20 years), there was a 780 case backhoe. It had 6 cy b cummins in it, turbo, innercooled, 24 volts, and air brakes. 3 speed transmission. It was a lot of backhoe. The tractor got wreched being hauled by a fellow. I was told about the bidding process after the deal was done. I never forget that, hen house ways Jim
