HO question

Hey, I was wondering how do you tell if a diesel is HO or not? I am looking at this 99 Dodge ext. cab short box 4x4 for $19,000. It doesnt have pw, pl, or ps. It has 43k miles. Do you guys think this is a good deal. The dealership says its a 24 valve but how do I know if its a HO or not? Thanks

I always look for the bleached hair, hot pants, and halter top.

I don't think the HO was an option in '99.

Re:HO question

Not sure. ???
Hopefully others will join in with Used Truck experience.
Try Kelly Blue Book and input the data to see what it says

There's a '99 4X4 Q-cab dually in the classifieds at the top of the page for less.

Re:HO question

Is there a certain number in the VIN that would tell if its a HO or not?

Re:HO question

Pretty much, for 2002 at least, if it has a 6 speed it is a HO.
5 speed it is a SO.
Automatic, also a SO.

There might be a few out there that were special ordered SO's with the 6speed.

If you look at the Data plate on the front of the engine, it will tell you if it is HO or not, HP number I believe.

Re:HO question

HO being High Output, SO is Standard Output.

Not sure on the VIN number, you might check dodgeram.org, if I remember right, they have a VIN decoding section.

phox

Re:HO question

From 98.5 to 2000, the ETC Standard Output was the only engine available, no matter whether you had an auto, 5 speed or 6 speed.

In 2001 and 2002, if the truck has a 6 speed, its got the ETH High Output. If its an auto, or 5 speed, its an ETC SO.

As Derek said, the ETC SO is a doggoned good engine and doesn't require a hybrid VP44 to make excessively large gobs of HP. In my mind, the perfect truck is the 2000 and under ETC/6 speed combo.

2003 throws a curve at you. 6 speeds are again ETH HO only, but now you can get an auto tucked behind the ETH as well.

Rod

Re:HO question

ETH and ETC are the Dodge ordering codes for the different engines. DEE is the code for the six speed trans (look at the window sticker). Thus you get ETH/DEE or ETC/DEE designations which are sometimes mentioned.

The ETC/DEE has a smaller transmission imput shaft than the ETH/DEE.
