help, need an Allis Chalmers mechanic

specifically their 6000 engine from about 1958. I have one that barely runs, blowing white smoke. figured it was a headgasket. got it halfway tore apart and found two bent pushrods. coolant was just changed and came out of the head perfectly green, if the head gasket failed wouldn't it be contaminated with oil? also wondering if the injectors need to come out to pull the head. thanks.

6000 Engine?? What is it in? Don't remember anything in that timeframe with a 6000 model designation!

Have you narrowed down which cylinder it is,....Top of pistion should be purdy clean if it was white smoking. Pin hole in a cylinder wall maybe?

Sumtimes you can remove the exhaust manifold and see if you can get alook at the valve stems. The steam cleans the carbon up some times,....I'm not an A/C mechanic but thats where I'd start looking

Aha...the 6000 engine wasn't one used in tractors...only industrial engines

Either way, if you found bent pushrods, I doubt it was the head gasket. Were both bent pushrods on the same cylinder?

It wasn't used in Ag machinery...only industrial AND construction engines.

You really won't know anything until you pull the head...my guess is there will be valve marks on #2, or some bent valves. As to what caused it, could be a bearing going bad, could be a broken valve, or many other things!

You should find it soon enough...I'd say it will be obvious. I'm not as familiar with the industrial engines as the Ag engines...but they should all be somewhat the same.

can I just remove the injector lines and lift the head off the studs?

I'll hit it hard next week and report back, thanks for the help, I don't do this every day.

Each and every time you start it does it spin like a top and bust off running or does the starter have to grunt hard as it starts to spin,...particularly on the first or second revolution then spins like a top? Is it attempting to hydraulic lock?

it's been over a year since it ran, but if memory serves, it started like it always did, just ran rough and smoked real bad.

never started easily, it's 50 years old, takes a shot of ether or two.

If it's been a year sense it's run and you can still rotate the thing lately then disregard all my blabbering LOL(no water leaking into the cyl's)

White smoke still got me Baffeled though.....

Anyhow

Just because the gasket blows, doesn't mean that oil will get into the coolant. depends on WHERE the gasket blew. I'm with the rod bearing too! That is more than likely why the pushrods are bent. Have a buddy who is into the AC's pretty heavy. Remember him talking about doing rods and mains quite often on those. I'd yank the head to be sure, but I'll bet you have more than one problem.
