Had a chat with a security guard at work...
A security guard at work came up to me and asked me what year my truck is, and noted that the 4" exhaust sounded really nice. After BSing for a few I found out that he was a diesel mechanic in the Army, and he has done alot of work on the HMMWVs. He told me that he was not impressed with the Detroit Diesel V8 that they put in them, and that they should have done it right and put in a Cummins. He was telling me that in his experience, nothing outlasts a Cummins even at the industrial level. Whether it's true or not, it was a nice thing to hear.
BTW, he had nothing good to say about Duramaxes either.

They are going to replace the humvee. The conecept design that I saw looked like the marine transport vehicle in the movie "Aliens". They were able to be stacked so more can be transported at a time. The problem with the current HMMWV is it comes unarmored, small arms fire can penetrate the windows and body killing soldiers inside. Adding enough armour to protect from gun fire and small roadside bombs adds too much weight.
Navistar was one of the companies that was mentioned for this project. I think they are gonna leave AM G. on the sidelines.

Cummins makes V-8 Diesels.
I wish I had one of those instead of this torquey, lumpy little I-6.
The problem with general purpose transport in the military is that, by the time it comes out, the mission's going to have changed. A new-generation up-armored Hummer's going to come out, and then we're going to end up in Korea where the roads are too undeveloped for the things to drive on (or something).

A V-8 is not inherently bad. They rev easier, and are better for high end power. Not what I want in my truck, but as The Beagle pointed out, would be gre4at for some.
Look at the D-Max, they have turned out to be a pretty powerful, fast engine with less work than a comparable 5.9.
