General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

I'm surprised the Mounties didn't take YOU away. I would have done the same thing, however.

Awesome, just awesome. Its finally good to hear that the criminal stays in his role as the criminal and not the victim... Especially in Canada

I hope to God that I never find anybody stealing diesel out of my tank... This stuff is getting spendy at $1.13/L

Well, if you have an aux tank, like the in bed tool box ones, it'd be very easy to make a fake fill hose. just disconnect the original fill hose, and plug the end. Put something nasty in it, like maybe castor oil, or some kind of super hot sauce. that way, when they try to siphon it out, they get a good mouthful.

Then plumb the aux tank to the main tank where you disconnected the filler hose.

I also think it wouldn't be very hard to take the original filler neck out, and put something in it to prevent siphoning, like maybe some heavy duty wire mesh.

You guys can ship the store-bought plastic locking gas caps. They only keep out honest people. I've bought quite a few part's rigs that had them and didn't come with a key, and they come right off by using large channel-locks and squeezing the outside of the cap. Usually they hardly even leave a mark, and the cap can go right back on and look like it was never touched. Hiding the fill tube is a better idea. I'd really like to do that with mine.

Right now I, like most people, are just trying to figure out fuel-savings plans. I figure I have 3 options: find a cheap source for fuel somewhere (not likely), find an alternative fuel (more likely, and I'm seriously going to be looking into WVO), or find a way to make the truck use less fuel. There is a fourth, but I don't like it...drive the truck less.

I agree that the locking cap is just a deterrent, but it's better then nothing. Most scum bags will go on and look for an easier target. Like stated before, if they want it bad enough, they'll just punch a hole in the plastic tank.

I picked up the locking cap from DC today. It's much better then I thought it would be. It locks by turning it and stays in the "click" mode. It can be defeated, but not real easily.

Great story. I'd have probably done the same thing
I need to at least get a locking cap for my Jeep, since it sits parked on the street most of the time. Very few people around here drive diesels so I'm not THAT worried about that

"The Chevy he was driving was an older 6.5. Looked like he was going to go tank to tank,he only had a hose. Cops said they are not looking forward to this becoming a more constant epidemic."

I wouldn't be too concerned. You can't siphon fuel uphill. Siphoning is gravity fed. Unless the fuel level in your tank, not just the filler neck, is higher than the fill neck of his truck, you're fuel isn't going into his tank with just a hose.

Watch your back... even tho' you may not want to hear this...

First... Rest assured I'm on your side... It felt good to read your story and the description of a rotter getting some good ole' JUSTICE... But you need to be aware the the "good ole times" have changed... You won't like this, but I am expressing this caution to you as a friend... again, on your side... I have a lot of miles on me... been around the Pike, so to speak... so for better or worse... Here goes...

Your decision to vent your own justice is a touchy one that could come back to haunt you very bady... Your alternate choice would have been to back off... dial 911... and let the cops do the arrest... I would guess in the densly populated area of Homestead, they would have arrived very quickly, a good chance to still catch the guy in the act...

Here's two possible bad scenarios for which you need to be prepared...

1.) Legal rataliation... Not only will he have independent thoughts about suing you, he will have friends & relatives who will push him to do it... There is no question, he can readily find a scum-bag lawyer to handle it... Watch your mailbox or doorstep for a process server...

2.) Physical retaliation... If he's REALLY a bad dude, he's going to dwell on your hurting him, and may try hurting you back... Be very guarded re yourself, family, and property for at least 90 days after his release... Scary ???... Yes it is... but you must be realistic... the guy could be a real sicko... and to be warned and on-guard could be of value... Watch your back...

This should all be considered by any other readers who may decide to "hip-shoot" vs. dial 911...

Please don't criticize me for writing this... Rest assured, I am no wimp... I'm a veteran of slugfests from the Yukon, Central Africa, Asia, So. America... It is because I ADMIRE our Homestead friend, I'm writing this so as to lessen the chances of his getting hurt... as well as the importance of giving giving real thought to choice of actions or reactions...

Notice... In this writing I'm not making or dictating the choice for you... simply offering food for thought... The choice is still yours...

...Ted
