getting truck serviced

I'm sure this has been covered a million times, but i like to ask anyhow. Just got my truck, where do i take it to get things like an oil change? It seems I have a small leak, where should i take it for this? dealership, garage, or special diesel center?

If you're the least bit mechanically inclined, I would do the work yourself. Oil Changes are very simple and the filter is really easy to get to (at least on my 02); just make sure you use the recomended filters and oil. I don’t like the idea of some young lube kid messing around with my Cummins. A dependable and reputable dodge dealer with good experience with diesels is good, but make sure you have a thick wallet. Not all dealerships have good experience with diesels though. I would look into a Cummins repair shop or maybe a local diesel mechanic whom you trust. Just track your leak down, explain it here, and you should have an answer before to long. From reading your other posts, you want to learn about the Cummins--working on it yourself is the best way!

Matt's right, oil changes are really easy on these engines. One of the biggest reasons I like to do my own is the oil filter. I (and many others on here) use the fleetguard filters directly from Cummins. You can get them at any Cummins dealer for around 5 bucks or so. Your dealer will use the same thing but charge near 20 bucks . I dont even wanna know what the local grease monkeys would use....

good luck
Jeff

If it's not a warranty problem, I'd take it to the local Cummins shop.

yeah i have the tools and experience to do probably any work on this thing. i just hate doing oil changes myself, by the time you go and get the oil and filter, come home and do it, then have to take the oil back and possibly spill it, outwieghs the cost of just payin to get it done. The leak is gonna be a tough one, wannadiesel is givin out free KDP repairs around my way so i may wait until i talk to him and see what we can accomplish. thanks guys

could the leak possibly be your crankcase breather bottle? the blow-by from mine used to get blown all over the bottom front of the engine......cant tell you how many people told me i had a bad oil leak...

just a thought....some trucks have more of a problem with this than others....

If you take it to a dealer make sure they have a diesel mechanic, I had a list of problems when I took mine in and they took my 100 dollar deductible and only addressed one problem. my truck was getting 9mpg and they said there wasnt a problem then they said they dont have a diesel mechanic. To go to another dealer I would have to pay another deductible. im at 15-16 mpg now after replacing my fuel filter and adding an injector cleaner.
