Diesel R&D facility to open in Columbia, SC
Just got this off today's Autotech Daily.
SIEMENS TO LAUNCH U.S.-BASED DIESEL R&D CENTER
Siemens VDO Automotive is converting a leased facility in Columbia, S.C., into a research and development center dedicated to diesel technologies for the North American market. The 17,500-sq-ft facility, due to open this spring, will develop and test digital valve and piezo electronic fuel injectors, diesel pumps and fuel rails. The center, which will focus upon truck applications, also will support contracts Siemens says it has won for unspecified 2007-model SUVs and pickup trucks. A $25 million investment includes engine dynamometers and various advanced testing equipment. The facility will employ 120 engineers and technicians—50 of them transfers from Siemens' car-oriented diesel systems operations in Regensburg, Germany. Until the new Columbia center is ready, Siemens will use space provided by nearby Midlands Technical College, which the company is working with on a variety of education and research projects. Siemens also has a joint venture with Navistar Corp. in Blythewood, S.C., called Siemens Diesel Systems Technologies, that produces digital valve fuel injectors.
