General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Why use motor oil when 2-stroke will lube just as well and IS formulated to be burned....cleanly!

In the olden days of outboard motors (45 and more years ago) we used to use 30W non detergent to mix with the gas.

Been there, done that!

Put about 8 gals of 87 octane in and caught it before I finished filling. Cost me the price of the gas, a full tank of diesel and $140 to get the contaminated fuel pumped out and disposed of (about 20 gallons). Figured I got off cheap for the potential damage to the injection system or the engine.

Now am even more careful but happy I didn't cause or have any damage done to the injection system or the engine.

I just read the post about precombustion detonation in a diesel , how is that possible ?

The Cummins 610 is quieter due to many noise reduction systems, including pilot injection - a short burst of fuel before the main injection which reduces the spike in combustion pressure for dramatically quieter combustion.

I will add this didn't start with the 610...

Do you know how diesel engines work? They don't have a spark plug or any other igniting device (except at cold starts such as the glow plug or heater box). The compress air which gets hot and then they inject the fuel (Direct injection). What I don't understand is the term "spike in combustion pressure" Does that mean that the engines pressure is too high? Why not reduce it. Or does it mean that near the end of the compression stroke after the air has been compressed enough for combustion that there is an unneeded spike in compression that is reduced by this small amount of fuel.
Don't ask me I just drive em...
