ford 6.0 problem

my friend has an 06 6.0 powerstroke. we were driving along yesterday about 25 mph and all of a sudden the motor started knocking REALLY LOUD. it sounded just like a hellicopter was above us. we got out, checked under the hood and found the knocking/banging noise to be coming from the motor and out of the air filter. my guess would be that it droped/bent an intake valve and now the compression is just coming back through the intake. what else could it be??

It could be all kinds of things. I know you're interested in trying to diagnose it, but if it's an '06 6.0, I wouldn't have even opened the hood - have it towed to the dealer and Start documenting everything. It's advisable to try to put down exactly where you were, how long you had been driving, the exace mileage, etc. This is all very importat as he's going to need documentation to get any repairs out of Ford - even with his warranty.

I just hope he never put a box, chip, programmer, exhaust, or other mods on it. If so he's likely on his own.

That's odd...I've never heard of a Ford 6.0 ever having any problems.

Could be an injector trying to melt one of the pistons, or any number of things.

I 2nd the advice you already got: If it's under warranty don't touch a thing and have it towed to the dealership.

i thought of an injector immediately but there was nothing coming out of the tailpipe, then we found the noise coming directly from the intake. as far as i know, the only way for compression to come back through the intake is if a valve is stuck open or broken off completely. this truck is completely stock w/ 8k miles on it. the amazing thing is that the truck still runs fine except for it being rough and of course the LOUD popping sound. hes having it towed to the dealer tomorrow to get it fixed then hes trading it as this is the 3rd problem since hes owned it. it already needed a turbo, now its gonna need a motor and they will have to lift the cab to replace it.

Curious, was it more like a HUEY helicoptor or more like an Apache? That's why I have two cell phones and a good warm coat and good walking shoes when I'm out in my service truck during the week. I baby it, but I'm just waiting for something......after he trades this turd furd he could by and Dodge and then the FORD would mean, Finally Own Respectable DodgeCummins

Now that is just wrong! Making fun of a ferd with a helo in the intake. This is a serious condition needing a heloextomey...or at least a ferd extration with a Dodge transplant.

Hey fellas, don't make fun of ferds. If you visit the 6.0 forums they will tell you that the people that complain on there (9 out of 10 posts) are a minority when it comes to troublesome 6.0's Remember, the people that don't have problems never visit the 6.0 forums

If it's the 3rd problem with the rig he could possibily DSB or lemon the truck, provided he's within state regualtions. The word "lemon' gets dealers to act quite rapidly - if they realize he's not happy and taking his money elsewhere, they will usually bend over backwards to try to keep a customer. Just insure he has all his documentation together, keep your cool - don't get angry withthe dealer, just be level-headed, professional, and basically as unaffected as possible. He sould also not be suprised if the dealer asks him to speak with a Ford factory rep about his truck. This isnt an uncommon thing, so Ford is wanting to get as much feedback as possible to try to prevent such disasters with the new 6.4l.

Good luck (to your friend) with all this...

Why guess? If it's an 06 then it should be under warranty? Why wouldn't your buddy just take it to the dealership? Or is their more to the story?

Yeah, except he was saying it was chuffing through the intake... I suppose the turbo could be surging, and it also made me wonder if the crankcase vents into the intake on those...

Anyhow the root of the problem is that it's a 6.0...
