I would say one hour at operating rpm as in dozer's and such equipment would equal 55 miles of wear. We rebuild these engines for Case heavy equipment and that is a good rule of thumb. Now stationary equipment such as generators would be less as they are not working as hard as a piece of earth moving equipment so I would guess it as 20 miles to a hour. Goodluck,,,Rick

7500 is getting up they if it hasnt bean rebuilt. thats like 400000 miles at 55 a hour I have seen a 5.9 in need of a rebuild at 4000 hours . have a old 903 cummins with over 11000 hours and it runs good. I think it has alot to do with how it used.warmed up cooled down worked stady 12 hours a day or 15 min.at a time.

What make of backhoe with 7500 hrs on it. Ran a 420D that had 3700 on it when I started and it was well past it's prime sure needed an overhaul. The controls would seem to pendulam when using the hoe! What was the problem with it?

We have a komatsu pc-200lc-5 with 15620 hrs on it. Other than 2 water pumps and a few hoses replaced it still works like new, well almost. Machine works 6 days a week, 10-11 hrs a day about 320 days a year only burns oil when it gets near the 200hr mark. Machine and all our equiptment is maintained daily. Were shooting for 20000 with no major repairs exept udercarraige. If you know were the machine came from and how it was maintained and operated you might have yourself a decent machine without much worry.

I remember reading in a Caterpillar publication one time that they considered 1 engine hour to be 38 miles North American rate or 33 miles European rate. I think that this is more realistic than 55mph. If you check the hours on your 2003 or newer Dodges I think that very few of us will be above 50mph. I just checked mine to do this post and mine figured out to 39.702mph.
Sure you will get the guy with less than 5000total miles on his truck that may prove me wrong, or the on highway hot shotter that makes a 100.000 miles a year but on average I think 38mph is pretty close.

I've always heard 38 mph for farm and construction equipment also but have rounded off to 40.
I've had several tractors make it past 15,000 hours without a rebuild.

Our skidsteer with a 4cyl izuzu in it is into the 5000 hour mark now with the engine being the only thing still in good shape. Also, IMHO the izuzu is not the "premium" engine in any piece of equip, so I would think a Cummins would present a whole new set of numbers to look at. My father (a diesel mechanic for off road equip and cranes) says the Cummins usually goes a little longer under normal wear and a lot longer under punishment than others he has worked on.

I recently bought a JCB with 5700 hours on it and it runs like a new one. It was well maintained however, and I got all the maintenance records with it.

My 93 Dodge has 8815 hours on it, all original and it still runs excellent. Oil gets changed every 200 hours WITHOUT FAIL.

It's all in how they're maintained I think.

Heavily worked tractors in West Texas (cotton farmers) work out to about 50:1. Mostly JD country and averages I am aware of are 10,000- 12,000 hrs between overhauls (this was 10 yrs ago).
