Engine Hours
Engine Hours
So much for DC and the shippers listening to Cummins regarding extensive idling. With 11 miles on my truck I checked the engine hour meter and it had 4 hours on it.
Has anyone else checked this and if so what were your hours. I hope there were no long term effects due to this.

I wouldn't even worry about it. Nuthin' you can do about it anyways. Someone could have left the key on.
Mine had 2 hours on the clock when I picked it up. Almost half of that time was put on by me before I paid for it during a "test" drive.

i know you want the best motor for your money but i wouldn't worry ... i bought my first in early '91 would let it idle for hours when it was bitter cold out ... had a good freind with a surveying business and 3 first gens ... if it was cold out they would run 10-12 hours a day with only a few miles a day ... sold mine at 275k only adjusted the valves once ... all three of his lasted 300k+ without even taking off the valve covers ...
he and i still own and beat our cummins daily,
we both chuckled when his dealer told him "now you can't just let these trucks idle forever"
in stock form i don't think most new buyers realize just how stout these b-series are
good luck with your new truck

How does one check hours on engine, what is procedure?
The truck must be turned off, ignition key on and press and hold the odometer reset button for 10 seconds. The engine hours will display. I think this procedure only works on 3rd generations only.

Mine has what I am asuming is engeine run time in the over head console. It says ERT and the time keeps going up so I asume thats total engine run time. I never payd any atention to what was on it when I bought it but it is now up to around or over 54 hours and I have 1500 miles on the truck. Does the trip meter reset methoud show idle time as well or just overall run time?

Also, the overhead display shows the amount of time the ignition switch was in the 'run' position.... engine doesn't have to be running for this time to increment. The hour meter displayed on the odometer is a true engine hour meter - only increments when the engine is running.

Heck, there was one guy not too long ago that had 160 hours on his when he picked it up. Now that seemed a bit much. But 4 hours is nothing.
THere was even some guy whining about his truck having 4 miles on it when he picked it up. He must have thougt it floated from point to point.
