Maxx Tractions

I have the 275 70 18s & I can say that they are the BEST all around tire I have ever had for my work truck. They handle snow, ice, mud, gravel & highways all very well. I have yet to find something they do NOT do well. I work on oil rigs all over western Canada & in any given month you can have to deal with highly variable road conditions including no roads. This tire is extremely versatile. The soft rubber & the siping make them an excellent snow & ice tire. Consider this tire a cross between a AT & an MT with sipping.

I have had them since August & have only put 8,000 mi on them. They are soft (snow flake rating) so do not expect more than 50,000 mi out of them with regular rotations.

If you do not see the Maxx Traction in a size you like the Goodyear Wrangler Duractrac is a very similar tire with a few more sizes available. I know several coworkers with the Duratracs & they are quieter on the Highway than the Maxx Tractions. The Dunlops are about $25 / tire cheaper for the same size. FYI Dunlop is a subsidary of Goodyear now.

here are some pics of mine on my 2004.5 Quad Cab in a review I posted on another forum.

Of the tires you listed ONLY the 285 75 16s are E rated if that matters to you.

Dont forget about the 305/70/16s. They are E rated also. I really like this tire and am thinking about it for my next set. It got great reviews on tirerack.com, similar to what oldsmobiledave said.

Thanks for the pics, sharp lookin tire.

The 315/75/16s were also 10 ply E rated, but it doesn't matter to much as long as there at least an 8 ply as I don't tow much

Update - First Rotation

Just wanted to update you all on these tires at my first rotation. I got home from wellsite in NE British Columbia on Thursday night & had the wheels / tires rotated on Friday.

I have clocked 13,000 km (8000 mi) on these tires so far. The tire shop owner handled this himself & the tires look awesome. All tires show very even wear with no cupping, just some slight feathering along the edges from the gravel I run. All 4 tires have 16/32 of tread remaining (started with 18/32). Two of the wheels needed a slight rebalance while the other two were still in balance. We moved the backs straight upfront & cross rotated the fronts to the rears.

I had started out with 60 lbs air pressure in all four tires but I seldom carry much weight so I had dropped the rears to 54 lbs at the 10,000 km mark. We set the tires up at 60 front & 50 rear & I am going to run them another 10,000 mi then rotate then again. So far so good with these Dunlop Rover Maxx Traction tires.

Kelly (owner of Country Tire) tells me he has sold numerous sets of these Dunlops since my test mule set that we put on my truck last summer. Every customer so far is pleased with the all around performance of these tires. I can drive further offroad in 2wd with these tires than I could in 4wd with my 325 60 18 Toyo Open Country ATs (note the toyos probably would have perfomred better in a 285 width).

I will add (as I have posted elsewhere) that I was tempted to jump over to the Goodyear Duratracs to get 295 65 18s when these Dunlops wear out but after seeing the Crew truck on my Rig blow away those tires after only 7 months on the same roads than I am driving I will not buy the Goodyears. The Duratracs on that F350 crew cab have 22,000 km on then (14,000 mi) running exactly the same roads as me & they are more than 50% worn plus I know that the tiress were rotated when that truck was in Grande Prairie AB for service. Come break up in April when the frost comes out of the ground & we are still drilling on our next well that crew truck will be needing new tires or it will be stuck in the mud daily.

If you are looking for an AT / MT hybrid for your truck consider these Dunlop Rover Maxx Tractions. So far they seem to be miles ahead of the old Dunlop Rovers (aka JUNK) & are fairly priced compared to other AT / MT hybrids (like Duratracs & DC FC 11s).

I update this again next rotation in 10,000 mi.

I've driven on practically every HD tire that exists in this country. My conclusion is Hercules Trail Digger M/T's and Dunlop M/T's are just about the same.

I just had a set of 315/70/17's installed. This was the first set the tire guy has sold. My only concern is the availability of the tires. It took a week to get them in, but I guess that was true of any brand tire in this size. I checked about 10 different places around town and nobody had any 315's of any size in stock.

Noise wise they are an MT, but I would say they are barely louder than the BFG AT's I had before these. Hopefully they wear like Oldsdave's, I would like to see about 50k out of them. I don't have any sign's of DW with them, running 45 front and 40 rear unloaded.

I disagree. The herculese is more like the old Rover MT than the Maxx Traction

The Herc does look like a pretty good MT but the Dunlop is snow flake rated & moulded from softer rubber & has more siping.

If snow & ice are not an issue that Herc looks like a good tire.

I got 34,600 mi out of the Dunlop and am at 42,150 mi on the current Hercules - so guess which one I'm sticking with. I ran both in snow and ice last winter and yes they are difficult to find. TDW found them in a week and they were installed shortly thereafter. I have a Hercules highway set on the Dakota than now has 34,000 + on it - hardly any wear and also rated 50,000 mi. The snowflake just indicates a softer compound - it doesn't wear well on dry highway.

The Dunlop Maxx Traction was only released in March of 2009.

Are you saying you already wore out a set? Or are you talking about a different Dunlop tire? Do not confuse this tire with the Dunlop Radial Mud Rover.

& yes snow flake rated tires are a softer compound so that they are pliable in cold temps to deal with ice. When one lives north of the 48th this is essential.

Yes - never had the Rover. The reason I went with Hercules is I can buy them on either side of 49 without any problems and I've had good luck with them on the dually's.
