Diesel turbos for a gasser?

While reading the Grassroots motorsports, they list the CTD in the dodges for a good turbo for a homebuilt project. Said they are good to about 400hp and have a standard T3 flange. I was told that Diesel turbos wont work due to the rpm range they were "designed" to run in. However I usually try to match the compressor map to my intended useage. A couple people told me to get a diesel turbo for my side project, (383 Mopar) Just looking at ways to save some $$, of course actually to just be redistributed to BOMBing

why not use the charger? the speed the turbo spins is dependent on drive pressure/heat... the more of both you have, the faster the charger will spin...

i have heard though, that diesel turbos arn't sealed as well as ones designed for gassers that use a draw through system on carb'd engine. but in a blow through system with carb, it would work fine..

heck, they sell custom turbine housing on ebay so an HX40 holset can be mounted to little ricers with a bolt on downpipe... it should work.. i really can't see why not?

a turbo doesn't know what RPM the engine is turning... all it knows is exhaust volume...

they work just fine on gassers, i have a friend that is putting a hy9 on his dodge 4 banger, said it should hit 400 hp easy.

now...

two explanations why people might say diesel turbos don't work on gassers... both fairly dated explanations...

1. back in the day, a turbocharged gasser could very well be a draw-through carbureted setup... gotta have carbon seals... diesel turbos (and most modern gas turbos) don't have the correct seals.

2. the turbine side of non-wastegated turbos are generally way too big for a gas application and will spool slowly, etc. but with modern wastegated turbos, this isn't such an issue...

a 5.9 liter turning 2800rpm or a 2.3 turning 6500rpm... it's all exhaust volume.

now, you have to pay attention to the compressor maps, but the old domestic 4cyls have pretty crappy head flow and need high pressure ratios. that's why the 2.3t guys love the dodge holsets

Cool, I did read somewhere, wish I could remember off hand, but mentioned their "new" turbo was updated using the more effiecient "diesel" compressor blades, and he got better response on his race car. It was an article on someones car. He basically said the compressors used on diesels were more effiecient. Cool, now need an hx35/40 on my truck so I can use my HY on my GLH!

I've heard of people putting 6.5L TD turbos on 300 I-6 ford gas motors.. I may try it on my 300 I6

id think your 2.2 / 2.5 would have a tad difficulty spooling up that turbo unless you had some serious porting done by steve menagon or one of the big dogs.

Oh yea, not a direct bolt on the GLH. Its currently engine less, I have 2 T2's and a T1 in the shed. I was thinking of Brain Slowes DOHC on the 2.2L but I'm a little out of the loop on FWD Mopars. Gonna research a bit more on them before I tear into the 2.2L

2.3lturbos are all fun. While 300 HP may not sound like much, in a gutted 2500# merkur xr4ti with a T5 dropped in...
