facing fuel

The last time I was at Garmons, a guy with a D-max had a small fuel tank mounted in the bed next to his nitros bottle.I asked him what it was for and he told me it was 80 cetane diesel fuel, said he used it for racing. Don't know where he bought it but he said it was expensive.

Counter Jockey probably wouldn't know, but it wouldn't hurt to ask exactly what it is.
Are Gas stations required to keep MSD's on site?
(Material Safety Data Sheet, or is it MDS?)
It might state what it actually is.

I'm betting some grade of Jet Fuel.
Personally I wouldn't run it in a 24valve or 3rd gen engine, a 12 valve injection pump would handle it better.

Racing Fuel

Member Mexstan reported in a thread not too long ago about the diesel fuel in Mexico as having a higher cetane rating than the fuel sold in the U.S. Perhaps this is what they are selling as "racing fuel".

BBWD, it was not a higher cetane rating I mentioned, it was a higher sulpher content.
I have no idea what diesel racing fuel is. It may just be JP-1 or JP-4 that is being hyped as racing fuel and of course with a marked up price.
I used to use JP-4 in my diesel Delta 88 and found that it made zero difference in performance. The only noticeable difference was the smell of the exhaust which changed to that of the smell around an airport.

Mexican (Pemex) diesel does have a higher cetain, around 60.
Most US diesel is 42-46

There was at one time some jet fuel that was blended especially for the SR-71. I think it was JP-7, but not sure. It had highly oxygenated additives to allow the fuel to burn at the altitudes the aircraft operated at. We got some of it and put it in an old binder twin screw that was on its last legs. It ran like a stripe arsed ape, for a little while. Really cleaned up the tailpipe.

Jet fuels are typically more volatile than #2 diesel due to the need for high altitude burning. In essence they are a variance of #1 diesel. I highly doubt that a "racing diesel" has any sort of higher volatility than regular #2. If you've ever blended #1 diesel or Kerosene in extremely cold situations, you'll notice there is an increase in engine noise and a decrease in power. It is probably a High Sulfur, High Cetane fuel. High sulfur diesel will make your truck run smoother and quieter, but not better. Higher cetane is where the power is. You probably wouldn't know the difference in a stock CTD, but one that is running big Twins and fueled on the verge of hydrolock would definitely benefit. Ask me how I know so much about fuel, ----- I own an oil company...

Hey Jimmy-
I've been all over 76's web site (Unocal sold 'em to ConocoPhillips, I did not know that) and they don't mention diesel racing fuel as one of their products. Are you sure about what you saw? Maybe there's another diesel pump out by the racing fuel pump? That's the way the one (now closed) near me used to be set up in order to keep trucks from hitting the canopy.
